Mary Louise Watson Carlton
DURHAM — Mrs. Mary Louise Watson Carlton, 98, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Hock Family Pavilion. She was born in Durham County to the late James Allen Watson, Sr. and the late Ella Estell Pickett Watson. She was also predeceased by her husband, Albert Benjamin Carlton; brothers, James Joseph Watson, James Allen Watson, Billy Odell Watson and a sister, Josephine Estell Watson Chisenhall. Mrs. Carlton retired from Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company.
She is survived by her children, Wayne Carlton (Leonella), Brenda Carlton and Jantzen Carlton (Regina & Josh); grandchildren, Leann Draxten (Jeff), Heather Heinzel (Steve), Kim Murray (Mike) & Tim; great-grandchildren, Alecs, Jordan, Samuel, Charlotte, Seth, London, Erin, Ryan, Kate and daughter-in-law, Brenda, who was a caregiver and friend.
Funeral Service will be held 2:30 p.m., Sunday at Yates Baptist Church with the Rev. John Frederick officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the church.

Charles Fred Carty Jr.
DURHAM — Charles Fred Carty Jr. of Durham passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his wife of 63 years, Katharine, on Monday, February 17, 2014.
He was born in Charleston, WV on April 16, 1924 to the late Elizabeth H. and Charles F. Carty Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Litchfield Carty.
Charlie was a medic in the Army during World War II, stationed in France and Germany with the 180th Infantry. For his courageous efforts in bravely serving his country, he received the Bronze Star and also the Purple Heart. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he attended Louisburg College. He retired from a career at Duke University after 30 years.
Charlie believed strongly in helping his fellow veterans and faithfully volunteered at the VA hospital in Durham for over 30 years. He was an active member of Mt. Bethel Presbyterian Church and an avid dartball player, being a founding member of the Fellowship League in Durham. He was also a lifetime member of the NRA.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at Mt. Bethel Presbyterian Church, 3541 Rose of Sharon Rd., Durham, followed by burial with military honors at Maplewood Cemetery, Durham. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary.

Zelma M. Mans
DURHAM — Mrs. Zelma M. Mans of Durham, North Carolina, 87, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2014. Survivors include two brothers, O.C. Johnson and Everett Johnson; a sister, Maryland Harris; a son, Darius Mans; daughter-in-law, Deborah Jordan Mans; grandchildren, Paula, Sam and Alex Mans; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The memorial service will take place Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 1:00 pm at New Red Mountain Baptist Church, 1401 Red Mountain Road, in Rougemont.

Florence Lee Smith
DURHAM — Funeral services for Florence Lee Smith will be held Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. at Word of Faith, 1609 Camden Avenue, Durham, NC. Family visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to service.
She attended Durham Public School System. She was employed at Duke University Health System for 28 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Antionette Mercer and Natalie Smith Jenkins; three sons, Maurice Thorpe (Betty), Gregory Smith (Gwendolyn), and Tract Smith; 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Jazzman Jacobs
MEBANE — Jazzman Jacobs, 28, son of Sandy Webb and William Jacobs, born January 30, 2014 died February 16, 2014 in an auto accident.
The funeral will be conducted 2:00 PM, Saturday in Hester's Grove Baptist with family visitation one hour before the funeral 1:00 until 2:00 PM. Burial in the church cemetery.
His survivors are his mother and father, Sandy Webb and William Jacobs; sisters, Chole Dunn and Ashley Turner; grandmother, Shirley Webb; uncles, Charles Webb and Jay Jacobs; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Gladys Bradsher White
MEBANE — Mrs. Gladys Bradsher White, 76, daughter of the late Arthur and Lucinda Graves Bradsher died on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014 at Hospice of Alamance.
The funeral will be conducted 12:00 PM Thursday in Chavis-Parker Funeral Chapel with family visitation at 11:30 AM before the funeral. Interment will be in Graham Memorial Park.
She was a 1956 graduate of Central High School, Hillsborough, and employed by Burlington Industries for 27 years and retired from Riddle Mfg. after 12 years of service.
Family that predeceased her are her mother and father; sister, Annie Mae Poole; brothers, Linwood Bradsher, Matthew Bradsher and John Dewey Bradsher.
Survivors are her sister, Dorothy Pettiford (Alene), and nieces who were her caretakers, Barbara Bradsher, Charlotte Bradsher and Gale Pettiford; other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Public viewing 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM Wednesday in Chavis-Parker Funeral Home.

Ruth Fuller Hicks
CREEDMOOR — Ruth Fuller Hicks died peacefully at her home Sunday, February 16, 2014. She lived at her home in Creedmoor for 69 years where she raised her family of eight children with her husband, Ray F. Hicks, who passed away in January 2004.
She was a devoted and compassionate Christian, daughter, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. Ruth was the epitome of a homemaker and mother. She worked at Camp Butner as secretary to the Colonel, worked at Central Carolina Farmers as an office assistant and retired from Granville County Schools in food service. She was a committed member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and loved her church family as her own. She served the Lord and community and will never be forgotten.
Surviving are two daughters, Edie H. McDuffie and Stephanie Jane Hicks; six sons, Ray F. Hicks Sr. (Faye), Marshall S. Hicks (Linda), Lynwood F. Hicks (Jane), Charles O. Hicks (Cheryl), William H. Hicks, Michael W. Hicks; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by Dr. Marc Tilley. Burial will be in Rogers Cemetery in Creedmoor.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 – 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 20, 2014 prior to the funeral service at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and at other times at the home.

CHAPEL HILL — Rebecca Ruth Bennett, 51, of Chapel Hill, NC passed away on January 31, 2014. She is survived by her husband, David L. Branch, Jr.; daughters, Kira and Nicole; mother, Donna Bennett; sister, Leah Edwards; mother-in-law, Delores Nicholas; and many other devoted family members and friends. Minnie DiSclafani Sasso
CHAPEL HILL — Mrs. Minnie DiSclafani Sasso, 95, peacefully passed away in her home, early Sunday morning, February 16, 2014.
A native of Palermo, Sicily, Minnie was born March 11, 1918, the third daughter to the late Antonio and Gemma Olori DiSclafani.
Mrs. Sasso is preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Vincent, her parents, a brother, four sisters, and a nephew.
Survivors include her sister, Sandra Perillo of Durham, NC; her nephews, William R. Perillo and William Carrozza; her niece, Lorraine P. Werts; her namesake, Dominik Maxton Sulcheki; and many other great-nieces & great-nephews.
A Funeral Mass for Minnie D. Sasso will be held 10:15 AM, Friday, February 21, 2014 at The Catholic Community of St. Thomas More, 940 Carmichael Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

Susan Jacobs Smith
ROXBORO — Susan Jacobs Smith, age 61, of 308 Providence Road, Roxboro, NC died Monday afternoon February 17, 2014 at Duke Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Smith was a native of Durham County, NC, daughter of the late Edgar Aaron & Katherine Lassiter Jacobs and wife of 44 years to J. Waldo Smith who survives. She was retired from the medical industry and was a member of Longhurst United Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Christy S. Stewart & husband, Jason of Roxboro, NC; son, Scotty Smith & wife, Mandy of Wilson, NC; four beloved grandchildren, Rachel Smith, Dylan Smith, Kristen Smith and Dawson Stewart; sister, Cathy McClain & husband, Bill of North Wilksboro, NC; special lifetime friend, Linda Lee of Hillsborough, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith is preceded in death by two brothers, Gary & Edward Jacobs, and step-father, Charles Linwood Bissett.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Longhurst United Methodist Church by the Rev. Francisco Garcia-Velasquez and the Rev. Herbert Brown. Entombment will be in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 6:30 till 8:00 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Mary Frances Sparrow Vaughan
CLAYTON — Mary Frances Sparrow Vaughan, age 90, passed away Monday, February 17, 2014.
Services for Mrs. Vaughan will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, February 20, 2014 in the chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home with Reverend Brad Lee officiating. Private inurnment will be held later at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Durham.
She was a daughter of the late H. M. Sparrow and the late Mamie Brock Sparrow.
In addition to parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John G. Vaughan; two sons, Gregory Vaughan, Sr. and Gary Vaughan, Sr.; and one granddaughter.
She is survived by her daughter, Gail Horne of Largo, FL; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Betsy Vaughan of Clayton; sister, Sybil Stanton of Fayetteville; brother, Charles Honeycutt of Hamlet; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Thursday, February 20, 2014 at the funeral home prior to the service.
