Leslie George “Les” Dasch
DURHAM — Mr. Leslie George “Les” Dasch, 67, of Durham, died on Wednesday, February 12, 2014.
Mr. Dasch was born in Baltimore, the son of the late Louis Gilbert Dasch and Mary Elizabeth Herlth Dasch. He had lived in Durham since 1970 and retired as manager of Geer 70 Storage. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 7 for over 40 years. He also worked with children from the Murdoch Developmental Center.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Carline Fox Dasch; son, Les Dasch, Jr. of Maryland; stepsons, Bob Thayer of Maryland, Chadd Hudson of Houston, Texas, and Courtland Hudson of Forest City, NC; step-daughter, Wendy Thayer of Roxboro; one brother, Larry Dasch of Maryland; one sister, Barbara Derrick of Pennsylvania; and eleven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Marriotsville, Md. at a later date.

Frances Wrenn Sprinkle
DURHAM — Mrs. Frances Wrenn Sprinkle, 92, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Duke Regional Hospital. She was born in Durham County to the late Artis R. Wrenn and the late Rodeah J. Wrenn. She was also predeceased by her husband who she was married to for 61 years, John Samuel Sprinkle, and two brothers, Tyson W. Wrenn and Lloyd M. Wrenn. Mrs. Sprinkle was a retired Teachers Assistant with the Durham County School System and a longtime member of Lakewood Baptist Church, serving in many capacities.
She is survived by her daughters, Sylvia McMillan (Paul), Janice Sherron (Jack); son, Mark Sprinkle (Kathy); grandchildren, John McMillan (Jessica), Christina McMillan, Jennifer Harrison (Chris), Jill Sherron-Taylor (Joe), Angela Smith (Glenn), Caleb Sprinkle; great-grandchildren, Evan Harrison, Eric Harrison, Emma Kate Harrison, Janie Sherron, Jackson Taylor, Makayla Taylor and Sawyer Smith.
Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with Rev. Johnny Hewitt Rev. and Rev. Ed Denton officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Lydia “Elizabeth” Barton Utley
DURHAM — Lydia “Elizabeth” Barton Utley, born Dec. 5, 1922, was joyfully received in Heaven Feb. 14, 2014. Loved and cherished by all who knew her, she will be dearly missed. She will always be remembered as an inspiration in her unwavering faith in God, love of her family, and her ability to bring a joy of life to all she encountered. She amazed us all with her strength and humor.
In 2007, Ole West Durham Resident, Mrs. Utley, was recognized for her feisty and generous contributions to the neighborhood by the InterNeighborhood Council of Durham with a Neighborhood Hero Award. She was a force to be reckoned with as head of the West Durham neighborhood group in the 1970s, 80s, and early 90s working with others to get things done. This included working and succeeding with Carolina Action in getting West Main Street paved and stopping fast food restaurant and filling station from coming to West Main in the 1980s.
She volunteered to speak about the history of the Erwin Mill village for Preservation Durham and agreed to be interviewed for a college senior’s paper on the history of West Durham. (The paper won Yale University’s outstanding history award for 2007.)
Mrs. Utley was predeceased by her parents, Alex Hubert “Hue” Barton and Minnie Rasberry Barton; husband, James Paul Utley, Sr.; daughter, Linda Utley Wright; brothers, Walter, Hubert Gene, and Malcolm Barton; sisters, Lela Mae Barton, Lola Greenhill, Dorothy Chestnutt and Virginia Tolley.
She is survived by her children, Myra U. Harris and husband, Thomas of Durham, James P. Utley, Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC, Susan Utley of Durham, Ernest Wright, husband of Linda of Timberlake; grandchildren, Danny Greene, Jr., Terry Greene and wife, Donna, Elizabeth “Lisa” Wright Varner and husband, Bryan, Jennifer Harris, Amy Wright Gregory and husband, Russell, Jessica Dick; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held, Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 11:30 a.m. at West Durham Pentecostal Holiness Church, located on the corner of Hillsborough Rd. and Oakland Ave. in Durham with gravesite rites at Maplewood Cemetery. Family will receive friends in the church sanctuary prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:30 and in the home on Sunday, February 16 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Christine Tyler Wiggins
DURHAM — Mrs. Christine Tyler Wiggins, daughter of the late Marcus Vatan Tyler & Fannie Burton Tyler, was born on September 24, 1923. She transitioned from earth to heaven on Tuesday, February 11, 2014.
Christine was preceded in death by her husband, Marion, and her daughter, Carolyn Wiggins Stephenson (Melvin). Wonderful memories will be cherished by her remaining children, Marion Albert Wiggins (Justine), Gert Jeannettee Neville, Thessalonian Wiggins, Pastor Frenchee Maurice Wiggins (Sonia), and Shirley Wiggins Horton (Vinson); two sisters, Magdeline Snipes (Leon) and Annie Isabel McDowell (Tony); 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Royster and Shirley Ray (Chester); goddaughter Kathy Mason; special niece Gwendolyn (‘Queen’) Johnson; other much-loved nieces, nephews, and host of other relatives, extended family and friends. Special thanks to her caretaker, Ebony Daye; her physicians, Dr. Robert Paterson, Dr. Joseph Rogers, and Dr. Peter Kussin; and the doctors and nurses of Duke HomeCare and Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 17, 2014 at Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church, 801 Colfax Street. Family visitation begins at 12 noon, with services at 1:00 p.m. Services entrusted to Fisher Funeral Parlor, Inc.


Johnny Lee Wilson Sr.
CHAPEL HILL — Johnny Lee Wilson Sr., 62, went to his heavenly home on February 12, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Betty Wilson; a son, Johnny Wilson Jr.; and two daughters, Jamie Wilson and Denise Brooks. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Riverside Baptist Church, 1568 E. Harden St., Graham, NC, at 4:00 Monday, February 17.


Mildred Carden Cash
TIMBERLAKE — Mildred Carden Cash, 93, of Timberlake died Saturday morning, February 15, 2014 at Roxboro Health Care & Rehab. Mrs. Cash was born in Orange County, daughter of the late Ed Carden & Annie Riley Carden. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Jones Cash, and one sister, Evelyn Jones. Mrs. Cash was a homemaker and farmer. She was a very active member of Little River Presbyterian Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher & Elder. Mrs. Cash loved her church family and friends.
Surviving are her five children, Rachel Smith & husband Jimmy of Burlington, Linda Black & husband Elmer of Timberlake, Donald Cash & wife Faye of Timberlake, Kathy Ward & husband Joe of Hillsborough, Nell Smith & husband Mike of Timberlake; one sister, Marie Miller of Durham; eleven grandchildren & twenty-two great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, February 17, 2014 at Little River Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Chuck Link. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2:00 until 3:00 PM and after the Service on Monday, February 17, 2014 at Little River Presbyterian Church.
Pallbearers will be Randall Smith, Mark Flynt, Chuck Hall, Chris Edwards, David Brooks, Kenny Newcomer, Britt Carter, Michael Cash & Darryl Clayton.

Louise Justina Jones
ROXBORO — Louise Justina Jones, 90 of 5912 Hurdle Mills Road, died Saturday morning, February 15, 2014 at Person Memorial Hospital. Miss Jones was born in Person County, daughter of the late John Baxter Jones & Irene Blalock Jones.
Miss Jones was a graduate of Mars Hill College. She retired from AT&T with forty-five years of service and was a member of the Professional Secretary's International of Burlington for a number of years where she held several offices in the organization. She was named Secretary of the year in 1954 & 1986 as well as outstanding member in 1970. Miss Jones attended Flat River Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are one brother, John Paul Jones of Roxboro, and one sister, Christine Jones Long of Roxboro; eleven nieces & nephews.
Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, February 17, 2014 at Brooks & White Funeral Home by the Elder Jimmy Gray. Interment will follow in Flat River Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 until 11:00 AM Monday at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Samantha Shanell Atkins
MORRISVILLE — Funeral Services for Ms. Samantha Shanell Atkins, 35, of Morrisville, N.C. will be conducted on Monday at 5:00 p.m. from the Mt. Zion Christian Church. The family will meet with their friends 1 hour before the services. Survivors are sister Ms. Lanora Atkins, mother Mrs. Victoria Gardner Atkins, 3 godsons, 2 goddaughters, 1 brother, 3 brothers-in-Christ, 5 sisters-in-Christ, grandparents Ms. Rebecca Mayo and Ms. Rebecca Davis, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Eric Lloyd
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Eric Lloyd, 54, son of Rev. James R. and Margaret M. Lloyd, died February 10, 2014 after a very brief illness. He spent his early years in Rockingham and Durham, NC, then spent most of his life in Jacksonville, FL. His interests were fishing, cast-net shrimping, and gardening. He attended Calvin Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Viola McCauley and James G.C. and Suwannee Lloyd, and his cousin Brad Lloyd, all of Durham.
Survivors include his parents, his sister Melanie Lloyd Thompson (John D. Thompson) of Columbia, SC, his uncle Kenneth E.C. Lloyd, nieces Stephanie and Heather Thompson, nephew Jeremy Thompson, and cousins Alan and Kenneth Gregory Lloyd.
Funeral services will be in Durham Monday February 17 at 2 pm at Clements Funeral Home Chapel, preceded by visitation from 12:30 – 1:45pm. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park of Durham.
In lieu of flowers the family will appreciate a donation to Calvin Presbyterian Church, 4050 Barnes Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32207 for the Shallow Well program to provide fresh water for villages in Africa.
