Boyd Lee Daniels
DURHAM - Boyd Lee Daniels, aged 86, died on Thursday, March 28, in his home. He was born February 5, 1927, to Lee and Ethel Daniels. A native of Sandusky, Ohio, Dr. Daniels holds a B.A. degree from the College of Wooster (English and Greek), a Master of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary (focus on Biblical languages and church history), and a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Duke University. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he was honored with the Phi Beta Kappa Distinguished Service Award from the University of Tennessee in 1982.
Ordained to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1950, Dr. Daniels served pastorates in the Durham, North Carolina area and Knoxville, Tennessee. He held academic and administrative posts at Duke University, Maryville College (Tennessee) and the University of Tennessee - Knoxville. At the time of his retirement in 1989, he was serving as Executive Secretary of Library Services for the American Bible Society. During his retirement years in Durham, Dr. Daniels was active in the leadership of Durham Congregations in Action and Crop Walk.
In addition to these many accomplishments, Dr. Daniels is remembered for his passions for social justice, classical music, travel, books, other cultures, stamp collecting and genealogy (not to mention peanut M&Ms). His broad-ranging interests allowed him to develop relationships with people from all walks of life.
Dr. Daniels is survived by his brother, Dean Daniels; his five children and their spouses, Diantha, Lee (Karen), Ellen (Todd), Greg (Beatriz), Amy (Sandy); stepdaughter, Laurie Fink-Green; and grandchildren, Aaron, Christina, Callie, Caroline, Laura, Matthew, Eric, Rachel, Kristi, Elizabeth, Christopher, Jennifer.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 1, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Watts Street Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CROP or to the mission fund of Watts Street Baptist Church.

Steven Milton Ellis
DURHAM - Steven Milton Ellis, of Durham, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2013 at his residence. Born in Durham County, Steven is the son of Shirley Ramona Rauschert, of Durham, and the late Thurman Ellis. Mr. Ellis worked as a handyman in the construction industry.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Ellis is survived by three uncles, Donnie Batten and wife, Beth, Jack Batten and Erwin Batten; and an aunt, Catherine Bailey and husband, Joe.

Billie Frances Washington Garner
DURHAM - Billie Frances Washington Garner, 92, a longtime resident of Durham, passed away Friday, March 29, 2013 at the Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.
A native of Cumberland County, the daughter of the late Thomas Hubert and Mary Magdelene Veasey Washington, she was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, lived at Croasdaile Village for many years and faithfully attended Few Chapel in the Croasdaile community.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2013 in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by Rev. Jimmy Weaver. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor.
Surviving are a son, William “Bill” B. Garner III and wife, Ila Rose Garner, of Bahama; and many special nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hock Family Pavilion, 4023 N. Roxboro Road, Durham, NC 27704; or to Bethany United Methodist Church, 2809 Guess Road, Durham, NC 27705.
Visitation will be held Monday, April 1, 2013 from 12:30-1:45 p.m. prior to the funeral service at the Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.

Ozzie Myrtle Rogers
DURHAM - Ms. Ozzie Myrtle Rogers, 70, of Durham, NC, transitioned from her earthly home on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at DUMC.
Ozzie was employed with Durham Public Schools for over 40 years. She retired her position in 2006. She completed her education at Merrick Moore High School. 
She is survived by her only child, the love of her life, Nichole Rogers-Warren (Reginald); and four grandchildren, Shaun, Reggie Jr., Nicholas and Kamryn. She also leaves behind two great grandchildren, Sienna and Edin; two sisters, Anne Mae Murphy, and Marie Johnson; and one brother, Rodney Rogers (Bonita). 
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 with visitation at 12, services at 1 p.m. at Union Baptist Church.
Interment following at Beechwood Cemetery.

Avis Hager Upchurch
DURHAM — Mrs. Avis Hager Upchurch, 91, passed away Friday, March 29, 2013 at Hock Family Pavilion. She was born in Lincoln County to the late Andrew Hager and Sally Belle Moose Hager. Mrs. Upchurch was also preceded in death by husbands, Robert James Jones and Joseph Baxton Upchurch. Mrs. Upchurch was a bookkeeper in the automotive industry.
Surviving are her sons, Bob Jones (Beverly), Steve Jones (Judy); grandchildren, Kim Edminston (Armondo), Angela Jones, Brad Jones (Georgia); great-grandchildren, Ellie and Isaac Jones; and a sister, Winnie Ikerd.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, April 1, 2013 at Clements Funeral Chapel with Rev. Nathan Whittman officiating. Family will receive friends an hour prior to service beginning at 10 a.m. at Clements Funeral Home. Burial will be held Monday at 3:30 p.m. in Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory, NC.

John H. Guill
MEBANE — John Hampton Guill, age 78, of 301 Willow Brook Court, Mebane, N.C. and formerly of Sutherlin, Va., died on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at his residence following a long battle with cancer.
Mr. Guill was born on January 31, 1935 in Huntington, W. Va., a son of the late Jesse Herman Guill and the late Trixie Hodnett Guill. He attended VPI and majored in Agricultural Engineering. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed for four years in Rhodes, Greece. He was employed until his retirement with Research Triangle Institute in the Chemistry Life Sciences Division. He co-taught the Senior Adult Men’s Class at First Baptist Church in Hillsborough where he was a member for many years. He was a member at Arbor Baptist Church and the Men’s Group and the Fellowship Sunday School Class in Sutherlin, Va. On June 16, 1973, he married Carol Guill, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by several cousins; a niece and a nephew. He was predeceased by a brother, James Lee Guill.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2013 from Arbor Baptist Church with the Reverend Larry Davis officiating. Military Rites will be performed by the Dan River Post 1097, American Legion Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society will be appreciated.
