Marvin Best Jr.
DURHAM - Marvin Best Jr., 64, departed his life on March 25, 2013. He leaves behind his dear wife of 44 years, Carolyn C. Best; one daughter; and two sons; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three brothers; and six sisters. 
A viewing will be held at the Kingdom Hall on Bon Air Dr., Durham, NC on Saturday, March 30 from 1:30 to 2 p.m. and the service will begin at 2 p.m.

Catherine Early Harris
DURHAM - Mrs. Catherine Early Harris, 88, of Durham, died on Tuesday, March 26, 2013.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Winford Harris.
She is survived by her son, Glenn Harris; and two grandsons.

John Stuart Heald
DURHAM — John Stuart Heald, age 70, died on Sunday, March 24th, 2013 after several months of declining health. He was born in upstate New York and moved to Durham, North Carolina in his teens where he lived and worked for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Gresham Heald; and his daughters, Susan Grubbs and husband, Neal, and Lou Bray and husband, Jeremy. He has five grandchildren that were the love of his life; Sarah, John, Allison, Cristiana, and Ashley. His family brought much joy and happiness to him.
The family will receive friends and family at the home of Neal and Susan Grubbs on Sunday, March 31st from 2 to 4 p.m.

DURHAM - Mrs. Deloris McNeil Herndon "Tootie", 60, of 500 Pickwick Trail, Apt 235, died Saturday, March 23, 2013. Joe Thurman Pickard
DURHAM - Joe Thurman Pickard, 95, of Hillsborough, NC passed away peacefully on March 26, 2013 surrounded by his loving and devoted family on his farm.
Mr. Pickard was born in Durham County to the late James Ernest Pickard and Mae Johnson Pickard of Durham. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mildred Cashwell Pickard; a daughter, Barbara Jo Pickard Pate; along with three brothers, Lewis Pickard, John Pickard and James (Snooky) Pickard. He is survived by a sister, Sue Pickard; and two brothers, Kenneth Pickard and Bill Pickard. Mr. Pickard is also survived by daughter, Pamela Pickard Couch and her husband, Lea; four grandchildren (who called him “Big Da”), Leigh Ann Dobson Safrit, Andrienne Pate Parker, Susie Couch Snell and Brian Scott Pate; along with nine great-grandchildren, Trey Dobson, Jack Safrit, Jimmy Parker, Barbara Ann Whittfield, Jessica Parker, Bailey Snell, Ben Snell, Banks Snell and Campbell Pate.
Mr. Pickard proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army in the Atlantic Wing of the Air Transport Command. After the war, Mr. Pickard began working in the family-founded business, Pickard Roofing Company. He was instrumental in the operation of the company until his retirement in 1973. 
Mr. Pickard was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Hillsborough where he was involved in so many aspects of the church for 41 years. Mr. Pickard liked to tinker around the farm and spend time with his family.
The family would like to thank Dr. David Bright, his physician; and the caretakers who faithfully took care of Mr. Pickard, Kathy Gram, Marilyn Geffers, Erica Smith, and Beth Rickman.
Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 29 from the Chapel of Hall Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 W. Main Street in Durham with close family friend, Rev. Amy Hardee, presiding. Burial with military honors will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.
Friends may visit one hour prior to the service, from 10-11 a.m. in the funeral home.

Tracey Booth Snipes
DURHAM — Mrs. Tracey Booth Snipes, 44, of 2604 Cherbonne Dr., Greensboro, died Monday, March 25, 2013 at UNC Memorial Hospital.  Her service will be held at First Calvary Baptist Church, 1311 Morehead Ave. at 12 noon on Friday, March 29. Interment will follow in Glennview Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., one hour prior to the service, and all other times at 207 West Weaver St.
Mrs. Snipes is survived by her husband, Kenneth; two daughters, Nakyyah and Yazmia; mother, Leola B. Booth; and two brothers, Santo and Kerry Booth.

Shelton Eugene Spell
DURHAM - Mr. Shelton Eugene Spell, 84, died early Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Duke University Hospital. Mr. Spell was born in Durham, the son of the late Eugene Spell and the late Bertha Buchanan Spell. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Prior to his retirement he was employed by Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virgie McFarland.
Mr. Spell is survived by his wife, Lottie Spell; daughter, Vicki Pickard and husband, Mark; son, Mike Spell; grandchildren, Tyson Pickard and Mikayla Spell; and a sister, Susan Butler.
A graveside service will be held Friday 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Donnie Cash officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Virginia Madren Stone
DURHAM — Virginia Madren Stone, 92, died March 21, 2013. She was born October 25, 1920 in Caswell County to Ogburn Madren and Minnie Apple Madren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Merle K. Stone; her son, James M. Stone; three sisters; and two brothers.
She was a graduate of Anderson High School and the Watts Hospital School of Nursing. Prior to starting a family, she was a registered nurse at Duke Hospital, now DUMC. She enjoyed gardening and reading.
Virginia is survived by a son, William M. Stone, of Cornelius, NC; a daughter, Mary Ellen Stone, of Virginia Beach, VA; her daughter-in-law, Carol B. Stone, of Raleigh, NC; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a niece, Alice M. Reavis, of Burlington, NC; and a dear family friend, Vickie Terrell. The family would like to thank Frankie Perry for her guidance and support.
In accordance with Virginia’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. There will be a private interment at a later date.

Jeffrey Lane Wright
DURHAM — Mr. Jeffrey Lane Wright, 41 of 1111 E. Oak Drive, died on Tuesday, March 26, 2013.
Jeff was a native and lifelong resident of Durham. He owned and operated the Wright Pool Company and had a NAUI Scuba certification. He was loved by his Aunts, Uncles and Cousins and will be missed. He also will be missed by his “babies”, his pets, Maja, Bond and Anais. He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Thomas Wright; and paternal grandparents, Johnny and Margaret Wright.
He is survived by his mother, Carol Bailey Wright; materal grandmother, Ruby Edwards Bailey; brother, Dwight Wright; sister, Trisha Wright Blayney (Steve); and the love of his life, Audrey Wright.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiate by Rev. Denver Shelton. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers are Jay Nichols, Charles Parrish, Tommy Parrish, Alexander Aviles, Lee Stone and Mike Turner.

Evelyn Eugene Durham
June 5, 1931-March 26, 2013

CHAPEL HILL - Evelyn Eugene “Bird” Durham, 81, of Chapel Hill, NC died March 26th, 2013. She was born in Durham, NC, the daughter of Walter Leo Pickett and Minnie Finch Cole Pickett. Bird was a graduate of Durham High School.
In 1955, she was married to Charles Mebane Durham at Yates Baptist Church in Durham, NC. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
Bird was employed by the UNC Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools, and Duke Power. She worked as an administrative assistant at each of her employ. Bird was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she was a member of the church choir.  
Bird was a devoted wife and mother who was dearly love by all who knew her. Her passion in life was being with family and cooking.
She is pre-deceased by her husband. She leaves behind her children, Stanley Charles Durham Sr. of Columbia, SC, and his family, wife, Jane Ashley Durham, and children, Brittany Lee McAndrews, Charles McAndrews, Stanley Charles Durham Jr., and Madison McKenzie Durham; daughter, Beverly Durham Grabowski, of Chapel Hill, NC and children, Emma Clare Grabowski and Evelyn Kate Grabowski; Kelton Strowd Durham of Manhattan Beach, CA, and his family, wife, Terri Parsons Durham, and children, Charles Grant Durham, and Grace Cameron Durham. She also leaves behind two sisters, Affie Pickett Collins, LaVerne Pickett Tilley; and a brother, Donald Pickett. She is also pre-deceased by three sisters, Marjorie Turner, Mary Helon Merritt, and Jane Lloyd; and four brothers, W.L. Pickett, Macks Pickett, Philip Pickett LeRoy and Burle Pickett.
There will be a visitation service at 11 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 12 noon on Friday March 29th at Antioch Baptist Church. There will be a celebration of Bird’s Life to follow at the church fellowship hall after the graveside service.

HILLSBOROUGH - Demetrius Jerome Linster, age 46, died March 25, 2013 at Duke University Medical Center.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Mt. Bright Baptist Church. Burial will be in Bradsher Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Church.
Survivors are children, Aneisha Linster, Sierra Linster and Chantel Evans; one sister, Tammy Williamson; two brothers, Thomas Linster and Darryl Linster.

Mary Francis Rivers Pinson Brown
DALTON, GA - Mrs. Mary Francis Rivers Pinson Brown, age 76, Of Dalton, Georgia passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013 at her residence with her family at her side. She was employed by the Durham Public School System and as a Durham County Agricultural Extension Agent. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Dalton, Georgia, a member of Church Women United, and a founding member of Abiding Savior Lutheran in Durham, N.C. She was preceded in death by her father, Rev. Curtis Rivers Sr.; brother, Ray F. Betton; and first husband, Thomas F. Pinson Sr.
Survivors are her husband, Robert L. Brown Jr.; children, Thomas F. (Marian) Pinson Jr. of Dalton, Mary Cecelia (Larry) Hall of Durham, North Carolina, Verna (Myron) Lewandowski of Sharpsburg, Georgia, and Lisha Williams of Dalton; mother, Eva Lou Rivers of Dalton; sisters, Claudette (Thomas) Rivers King of Atlanta, Georgia and Teresa (Frank) Ray of Dalton; brothers, Curtis (Patricia) Rivers Jr. of Dalton, Robert (Helen) Rivers of Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia, and David (Ollie) Betton of Decatur, Georgia; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 1 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church with Pastor Kenneth Scaife and other ministers officiating. Anabella Cole Curry
SELMA – Anabella Cole Curry, age 3, died suddenly Monday morning at her home.  Born November 10, 2009 in Johnston County, she is a daughter of Chelsey Dodge and Christopher Adams of Selma. Anabella received the special gift of a heart transplant on April 3, 2012.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma with the Rev. Rodney Pearce and Chaplain Emily Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in the Price Cemetery near Pine Level.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her sister, Addison Grace Curry of the home; grandparents, Charles and Karen Dodge of Selma; aunts, Daniell Dodge and Ashley Dodge both of Selma; uncle, Charles Ray “Chip” Dodge Jr. of Selma; great grandmother, Betty Baucom and husband, Bill, of Emerald Isle; and great grandfather, Larry Dodge of Pine Level.

Catherine (Cathy) Nell Thorpe
VIRGINIA — Mrs. Catherine (Cathy) Nell Thorpe, age 65, passed Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia.
She was born to Eunice Mae McGhee and the late Frank McGhee in Oxford, North Carolina.
A Granville County Native, Cathy joined Hardie Grove Baptist Church in Oxford, and is a graduate of Mary Potter High School in Oxford, NC.
She was employed with the Newport News Public Schools Transportation Department, Newport News, VA until her health no longer permitted.
Survivors include; two sons, Thomas Bernard Thorpe and Shawn Nicholas Thorpe both of Newport News, VA; one daughter, Brittney LaKeasha of the home; mother, Eunice Mae McGhee of Oxford, NC; three brothers, James Frank McGhee and Alvin Tommie McGhee, both of Oxford, NC and Ernest Crowder of Laurel, MD; two sisters, Delores M. Chambers-Dupuy and Muriel L. McGhee, both of Palm Coast, FL; mother-in-law, Beatrice Green Thorpe of Butner, NC; four granddaughters; one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 12 noon in the Betts & Son Funeral Home Chapel with eulogy by Reverend Michael Alston. Interment will follow in the White Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.
Viewing will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
