Eunice Parker Hopkins

DURHAM — Eunice Parker Hopkins, 96, departed her life on March 20, 2013. She is survived by her daughter, Helen Hopkins; and son, Bing Hopkins; two granddaughters, one grandson, two great grandsons, and two great granddaughters, four nieces, three  nephews, and other relatives and friends.  Funeral services will be at New Red Mountain Baptist Church on Sunday at 2 p.m. with visitation at 1:30 p.m.


Leroy James Jones
DURHAM — Mr. Leroy James Jones, son of the late Zora Nickerson and Alfred Jones was born November 26, 1926 in Crowley, Louisiana. He departed this life February 26, 2013 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.
He attended Catholic School in Crowley, Louisiana. His secondary education was at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he majored in Business Administration. He served in the United States Army and Air Force. He served in three wars: World War II, Korean War and the Viet Nam War. He dedicated 20 plus years with Legal Services geared towards assisting under privileged people. He also served 19 years on the Health Board of Directors. He was the founder of the building for the Masonic Temple, C.F. Ladd Lodge #48 in 1977. He was W.M. Wishful Master, Prince Hall Affiliation, Royal Arc Mason, Prince Hall Affiliation and the 32nd Degree and 33rd Degree Grand Mason. He was voted Black Paraprofessional "Man of the Year" by Kappa Gamma Fraternity and Zeta Sorority (1982). He was voted by North Carolina Services as "Client of the Year" (1994).He leaves to mourn, his loving and devoted wife, Priscilla Byrd Jones of Graham, NC. Dad was a true American Hero to his country and to his family. He will be truly missed by family and friends.Service was held at First Baptist Church in Chapel Hill on March 3, 2013. His interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. on Monday, March 25, 2013.


Stephen Alfred Pendergrass
ROUGEMONT — Stephen Alfred Pendergrass, 61, of 12521 N. Roxboro Rd., Rougemont, died Friday, March 22, 2013.  Born in Durham County, Mr. Pendergrass was the son of the late James Alfred Pendergrass and Mattie Poe Pendergrass, of Durham.
Mr. Pendergrass retired from the City of Durham and was the Past Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 852.  He loved motorcycles, hunting, NASCAR and sitting on his front porch.  Mr. Pendergrass was affectionately known to his grandchildren by "Pa".
In addition to his mother, Mr. Pendergrass is survived by his wife Barbara Ann McBroom Pendergrass; three children, Tammy Taylor and husband Mike, of New Mexico, Jamie Pendergrass, of Timberlake, and Stephanie Coons, and husband Dwight, of Florida; one brother, Keith Pendergrass, of Durham; six grandchildren, Chad Vaughn, Tristan Cash, Kaylee Pendergrass, Tyra Coons, Kaleb Pendergrass and Taryn Coons; one great-grandchild, Kylie-Rae Vaughn; and his life long friend Wayne "Hogbody" Bowen.
Graveside services will be held 2PM, Monday, March 25, 2013, at New Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Dr. M. David Chambers.  Visitation will be held 6:30-8PM, Sunday, at Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be Rex Blalock, Nick Bowen, Mike Taylor, Wallace Laws, II, Dwight Coons, and Charles McBroom.
Flowers are acceptable or memorials may be made to the Hock Family Pavilion, 4023 N. Roxboro Rd., Durham, NC, 27704.

Tommie S. Franklin

OXFORD — Funeral services for Mr. Tommie S. Franklin, age 84, are scheduled for 2 PM, Sunday March 24, 2013 at Mt. Zion Church in Oxford, North Carolina by Rev. Keith Williams. Mr. Franklin passed away early Thursday in Lexington. He was born July 19, 1928 in Granville County, North Carolina to the late Luther David and Ada Carden Franklin. He was a retired engineer for American Olean and a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran.
Mr. Franklin was a people person, he enjoyed visiting with people, especially playing cards and hosting card games. He was a long-time Nascar racing fan. Mr. Franklin was preceded in death by his sister, Rhea Roth. Survivors include his two sons, David Warren Franklin of Jackson and John Samuel Franklin of Smyrna, his daughter, Gina Freeman (Bret) of Greenwood, MS, a brother, John Franklin of Durham, NC, two sisters, Mary Alice Jones and Minnie Mae Franklin of Durham, NC, four grandchildren, Laura, Kimberly, and William Franklin, and Hillary Freeman, two great grandchildren, Elijah and Roman Franklin, and his former wife of over 40 years, Doris Hayes Franklin of Jackson.  The family would like to say a special thank you to Heritage Place of Lexington and Unity Hospice for their care. Gentry-Newell & Vaughan is in charge of the local services.


Wiley Edward "Eddie" Jones

ROXBORO — Wiley Edward "Eddie" Jones, 83, of Roxboro, died Thursday, March 21, 2013. Born in Person County, Mr. Jones was the son of the late Jule and Lizzie Wright Jones. Mr. Jones retired from the US Postal Service and was a farmer. He was a member of Clement Baptist Church where he previously was a deacon. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean Era. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his brothers, Curtis Jones and Linwood Jones; and his sister, Ruby Rimmer.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Hall Jones; one son, Michael Jones, of Charlotte; one brother, Robert Jones and wife, Joyce, of Roxboro.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Clement Baptist Church by the Rev. Joel Bradsher and the Dr. DuPre Sanders. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with the Dr. Ben Gault officiating.
Visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Clement Baptist Church prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Robby Jones, Lin Jones, Hassell Thomas "Yogi" Blaylock Jr., Jerry Jobe, Phillip Adams, Radford Garrett, Dan Featherston, and Mark Hall. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Senior Adult Men's Sunday School Class.
