Nannie Carlene Nance Potts
DURHAM — Mrs. Nannie Carlene Nance Potts, 95 of Durham died on Tuesday, July 22, 2014. She was the daughter of the late John Jackson Nance and Jennie Lee Jacobs Nance. She loved keeping children and a clean house. She was a member of Layman's Chapel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Freddie Newton Crabtree and Otho Potts, son, Douglas Newton Crabtree.
She is survived by two daughters, Hilda Crabtree Hardiman (Landon) of Durham; Doris Crabtree Gooch (Carlton) of Durham; two step-daughters, Carolyn Potts Holland (Charles) of Hendersonville, NC; and Kitty Ann Potts Gilliam (Gerald) of Kearnersville, NC; eight grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Pastor Terry Byrd will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. one hour prior to the service at Hudson Funeral Home. Flowers acceptable. Online condolences can be made at

Selena Warren Wheeler
DURHAM — Selena Warren Wheeler, 102, passed peacefully on July 18, 2014 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Dr. Stanford L. and Julia Warren and was married to the late John H. Wheeler. She is survived by her daughter, Julia W. Taylor, and son, Warren H. Wheeler.
Today between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., a viewing for Mrs. Wheeler will take place at Scarborough and Hargett Memorial Chapel. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Joseph’s AME Church at 2521 Fayetteville St., Durham, NC on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 1:00 pm, with visitation from 12:00-1:00 pm.

Dorothy Rhodes Couch
HILLSBOROUGH — Dorothy Rhodes Couch, 83, passed away Monday, July 21, 2014 at Brookshire Nursing Center. She was born in Wayne County to the late James and Ruby Rhodes. She was also preceded in death by her son, James Keith Couch, and brother, Odell Rhodes.
In addition to being a wonderful mother and wife, Dorothy worked hand in hand with her husband in the operations of John Couch Oil Co.
Mrs. Couch is survived by her husband, John Edward Couch; son, John E. Couch, Jr (Becky Weber); daughter, Karen C. Copeland (Steve); and sister, Gracie Maynard.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church Cemetery. In accordance with Dorothy’s wishes, there will be no visitation.

Shelton Reid Durham
CARRBORO — Shelton Reid Durham, born 1-23-1947, passed away on July 21, 2014.
Shelton was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Reid Durham and Stella Gwendolyn Marshall Black Durham (Gwen Durham). Shelton is survived by many cousins. Shelton was born and raised in Carrboro, NC on Oak Avenue. He was an avid fan of UNC-Chapel Hill, Ford Mustangs, motorcycles and anything patriotic. He enjoyed being a member of the Mustang Club of America for many years. He loved the beach and just walking along the shore for hours. Shelton was a longtime resident of Crescent Green Assisted Living in Carrboro, NC. He was a gentle soul, with the patience of Job, who will be missed by family and many friends. A special thank you to Shelton’s friend and mentor, Steve Lackey. Steve's friendship and guidance gave Shelton strength, confidence and peace of mind. A graveside service will be performed at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, 2791 Jones Ferry Rd., Pittsboro, NC 27312, on Thursday at 4PM. The family requests no flowers, but donations may be made to Cedar Grove United Methodist Church fund to save the church.

Margaret Tracy Traynor
DURHAM — Mrs. Margaret Tracy Traynor, 87, died Monday morning at her home. Mrs. Traynor was born in Berks County, PA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Marie Klee Tracy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Traynor.
Mrs. Traynor is survived by a daughter, Mary Margaret Hawk (Thomas); grandchildren, Christine Solsbury (Andrew), Lindsey M. Sawyer and Maggie E. Hawk.
A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m., Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Steve Worsley officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.

Everett Gray Hill
ROUGEMONT — Everett Gray Hill, son of Deloney and Hattie Hill, passed away July 22, 2014 at Duke Regional Hospital. He graduated from Mangum High School. He farmed for 25 years. He worked for Durham County Public Schools in the Maintenance Department for 21 years.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ruby Elliott Hill; two sons, Roger Elliott Hill (Gloria), David Carlton Hill (Sharron); one daughter, Joy Hill Roberts (Danny); six grandchildren, Melanie Baker, (Terry), Ivy Hill, Michael Hill, Dan Roberts (Jenny), Bryan Hill, and Karla Hill; two great-grandchildren, Kaileigh Hill and Myles Roberts; and two sisters, Doris Woodlief and Julia Elliott.
The family will receive friends 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Brooks & White Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Brooks & White Chapel with the Elder Bobby Daughtery officiating. Burial will be in the Person Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Hill, Dan Roberts, Bryan Hill, Karla Hill, Terry Baker, and Kyle Baker. Honorary pallbearers will be Melanie Baker, Ivy Hill, Jenny Roberts, Derek Stutts, Leslie Bales, and Arthur Hunt.

Clyde Rainey Whitfield
HURDLE MILLS — Clyde Rainey Whitfield, 69, of 6738 Burlington Road died July 22, 2014. He was born in Person County to the late Arch John and Canary Blalock Whitfield. Mr. Whitfield was also preceded in death by three brothers, Elbert Whitfield, Jimmie Whitfield, and Coy Whitfield; and one step-daughter, Amy Stone. He was of the Primitive Baptist Faith.
Surviving is his wife of nearly 30 years, Jean Ricks Whitfield, of the home; two children, Connie Rigsbee, of Hurdle Mills, Tony and Melissa Whitfield, of Hurdle Mills; one step-son, Jeffery Edwards, of Kenly; one brother, Ralph Whitfield; one sister, Alice Clayton and Leon; two grandchildren, Vance Rigsbee and Russell Rigsbee; two step-grandchildren, Ava Stone and Bella Stone; and one great-grandchild, Amelia Grace Rigsbee.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Brooks and White Chapel by the Elder Jimmy Gray. Interment will follow in the Whitfield Family Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6:30-8:00 PM Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Brooks and White Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Betty Ann Windom
ROXBORO — Betty Ann Windom, 58, of Roxboro, died Tuesday.
She was born to the late Estes Brown Robinson and Hazel Tipton, Jan. 17, 1956, in Burnsville, NC.
Betty was a member of Friendly Hills Baptist Church and worked with preschool children.
Betty is survived by one child, Matthew Windom of Roxboro, NC. Betty is also survived by one brother, Scottie Robinson and his wife Kaylor of Hillsborough, NC; two sisters, Bonnie Reaves and her husband Tony of Roxboro, NC; Mary Smith and her husband Steve of Roxboro, NC; one niece, Michelle Browning of Roxboro, NC; and one great-niece, Britney Carr of Roxboro, NC.
Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27th, at Friendly Hills Baptist Church in Hillsborough, NC. Memorial service will follow at 3 p.m.

Geary Elwin Owens
FAYETTEVILLE — Geary Elwin "WINE" Owens, 67, of 307 Myers Court, Fayetteville, NC, formerly of Durham, NC, died Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
He was a native of Roseboro, NC, the son of the late Major F. Owens and Essie Mae Owens Newberry.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 23, at 1:00 P.M. at Sam Springs A.M.E. Zion Church in Roseboro, NC with Rev. John Melvin officiating.
The repast will follow immediately in the fellowship hall. The family will receive friends at the home, 412 Douglas Ave., Roseboro, NC.
