DURHAM

Josephine “Ann” Long McCoy Alston
DURHAM — Mrs. Josephine “Ann” Long McCoy Alston was born on March 31, 1943 in Durham, North Carolina and departed this life on July 14, 2014 at Peak Treyburn Rehabilitation Facility, Durham, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Benjamin Long and Emma Woods Long. Mrs. Alston was known by her middle name, Ann. Very few people knew her as Josephine.
Mrs. Alston received her formal education in the former Durham City School System, now Durham Public Schools. She attended Hillside High School and was a member of the class of 1961. She also studied at Durham Technical Institute, now Durham Technical Community College.
She was employed with the former Durham City Schools, now Durham Public Schools, as a Teacher Assistant at Brogden Middle School. In her later years, until her retirement, she was an employee of Royal Home Fashions in both Durham and Burlington, North Carolina.
Her only son, Philbert Quincey McCoy, preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory and mourn her loss her husband, Harold Alston of the home; a very devoted daughter, Gwendolyn M. Coley, and son-in-law, Herman Coley; two sisters, Lucretia Long Mims (Billy), Durham, North Carolina, and Reverend Deborah Long Burroughs, San Francisco, California; grandchildren, Isaac and Jeaneen McQueen, Durham, North Carolina; four great-grandchildren; cousins and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 18, 2014 at 1:00 P. M. at Kyles Temple AME Zion Church. The church is located at 409 Dunstan Street, Durham, North Carolina. Visitation will be one-half hour prior to the funeral.

Dimitar Nikolov Dimitrov
DURHAM — Dimitar Nikolov Dimitrov, 50, died suddenly on July 7, 2014 at his home. He was born in Bulgaria, the son of Nikola Dimitrov Atanasov and Totka Hristova Atanasova. Dimitar was employed by Duke University and Costco. He was a member of Bulgarian East Orthodox Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Dimitrov is survived by his son, Nicolas Devlin of PA; sister, Milena Batchvarova, and brother-in-law, Jordan; and nieces, Aglaya and Sofia.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Thursday at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Martha Ann Manley Jones Easterling
DURHAM — Martha Ann Manley Jones Easterling was born on December 22, 1915 in Louisburg, North Carolina. She departed this life on July 10, 2014.
Her homegoing service will be held Thursday, July 17, 2014 at White Rock Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service.
Her parents moved the family from Louisburg to Durham where they joined Second Baptist Church (First Calvary Baptist Church). After her marriage to William Harvey Jones, she joined his church, White Rock Baptist Church. To this union was born one daughter, Valjeanne Jones-Williams.
She was educated in the Durham City Schools and graduated from Hillside High School in 1933. She took a course in Business Management at North Carolina Central University. She worked at Duke Hospital and subsequently on a girl's dormitory on East Campus as a receptionist and a switchboard operator. As the owner and operator of Jones Florist, she did the floral arrangements for the funeral of Dr. James E. Shepard. She assisted her husband in operating the College Inn, his restaurant which was listed. During segregation there were few places where visiting African-American dignitaries could dine. At the restaurant she hosted such notables as James Brown, Ruth Brown, Duke Ellington, Ike and Tina Turner, and Malcolm X. After her husband William Henry Jones, died in 1959, she took over the sole management of the business.
In 1964, she married Carl L. Easterling, the tennis and basketball coach at Hillside.
She was a member of the '43 Hornets Club, a charter member of the Junior Mothers Club, a charter member of the Fayetteville Street Planning group and a Women's Bible class at White Rock Baptist Church. She was honored by the Durham Business and Professional Chain.
Her seven brothers (Raymond Manley, Eddie Manley, Otis Manley Sr., Willie Manley, Fred Manley, General Fitzhugh Manley and Zollie Manley) and four sisters (Lucille Manley Clark, Carrie Manley Jones, Elnora Manley Smith and Victoria Manley Joyner) predeceased her. Her parents (Lee and Vinnie Alston Manley) and her husbands (William Henry Jones and Carl Easterling) also predeceased her.
Her survivors include one daughter, Valjeanne Jones-Williams; her nephews, Fitzhugh Manley (Mable), Harold Manley, Charles Joyner, Wayne Manley (Evelyn); her nieces, Elnora Joyner Shields and Victoria Joyner-Phillips; and a host of great-nieces and -nephews, great-great-nieces and -nephews, cousins and friends.

Lester Betts Jr.
HILLSBOROUGH — Lester Betts Jr. passed on July 14, 2014 from a battle of a long illness. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 18, 2014 at Holland Chapel AME Zion Church, Chatham County. Potted plants are welcome. The family will be receiving family and friends at the home, 517 Latimer Street, Hillsborough, NC 27278. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Payne Betts. The arrangements were made by Jones Funeral Home in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Renee Joyce Cohen Price
CHAPEL HILL — Mrs. Renee Joyce Cohen Price, age 67, a resident of Chapel Hill, died early Monday at UNC Hospitals.
Born November 21, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois, Renee was the daughter of the late Irving and Ruth Herman Cohen. She attended Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, Illinois where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education in June of 1968. She was director and teacher at Temple Anshe Shalom Pre-School for 23 years. After moving to Chapel Hill in 1998, she was employed with the Pre- School Division of the Lerner Day School for 10 years. Renee was a member of Judea Reform Congregation.
She was the beloved wife of Paul P. Price for the past 42 years, loving mother to Adam and Heather Price, devoted Savta (grandmother) to Reena and Chananiah Price, special sister to Dr. Mike Cohen and (sister-in-law) Gail Henderson, caring aunt to Jessie Viders, Jared Viders and Michael Henderson Cohen, great-aunt to Chana, Leiba, Miriam and Mordechai Viders, “Found” Cousin to Judy and Joyce, and longtime special friend to many, including very special nurse, Sherri Swan-Nesbitt.
Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM in Judea Reform Congregation Cemetery, Rabbi John Friedman officiating.
