Nathan Andrew Carey
DURHAM — Nathan Andrew Carey, 26, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at his home. He was born in Polk County, FL to Dennis Morgan Carey and Jana Beth Kimball, both of Durham.
Andrew loved the outdoors, hiking, camping and bike riding. He loved his family and friends. He was an avid fantasy writer, an advocate for medical marijuana legislation reform, and an advocate for research for alveolar soft part sarcoma. He graduated from Riverside High School in June 2007 and was a member of the Durham Science Fiction Writers Meet-Up Group. He always had a thirst for knowledge.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, Justin Allyn Carey of Durham, and grandmother, Beth Kimball of Durham.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Saturday at Grey Stone Church with Dr. Clay Waters officiating. Burial will follow at Palmer’s Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the church.

Glennis Lee "Baby Ross" Shepard
DURHAM — Funeral Services for Glennis Lee "Baby Ross" Shepard will be held Saturday, July 12, at 12 noon at Fisher Memorial United Holy Church located at 420 E. Piedmont Ave., Durham. The family visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Bishop Elroy Lewis, Pastor; Associate Minister Rev. Dr. Clarence Toomer, officiating.
Survivors include sister, Viola Stephens; one daughter, Glenda Shepard; three stepsons, June Allen (Linda), Frederick Allen (Jackie) and Marco Kornegay (Samantha); one stepdaughter, Teresa Spencer (Joseph); 1 grandson, Glen Green (Shanté); one great-grandson, Ezekiel Green; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

James "Weasel" Oakley
OXFORD — James "Weasel" Oakley, 72, passed away at Granville Medical on Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Mr. Oakley was a retired letter carrier with the United States Postal Service. He worked over 40 years at various post office locations in Durham, NC.
He is survived by his son, Obie Oakley of Oxford, NC; his daughters, Ruby Peace of Durham, NC and Crystal Oakley of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Annette Watson of Raleigh, NC; and 3 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Jean Raney; his son, James "Charlie" Oakley; and his parents, James L. Oakley, Sr. and Mamie P. Oakley.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 13, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford, NC. Viewing will occur one hour before the service at 1pm. Burial will be held in the New Corinth Baptist Church cemetery immediately following the service.
Flowers will be accepted at Wright Funeral Home, 3724 Salem Rd., Oxford, NC 27565.

Lucy Norville Kirby
EDINBURG, Va. — Lucy Norville Kirby of Edinburg, VA passed away on Tuesday, July 8th, 2014 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Mr. Randolph E. Kirby. A Memorial Service will be held for Mrs. Kirby on Saturday, July 12th, at 4:00 P.M. at Woodstock Presbyterian Church, 142 E. Court Street, Woodstock, VA, officiated by Pastor Lisa Webb. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Woodstock Presbyterian Church or Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Winchester, VA.
