Dr. Hazel M. Box
DURHAM — Dr. Hazel M. Box, 88, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014. Dr. Box was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Durham and had the distinction of becoming the first female member of the Durham Lions Club, and the first female District Governor representing North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her husband, Klay Kenneth Keith Box.
Surviving are two daughters, June Leah Box of Durham, Jayne Sharon Box and husband, Brian Summers of Georgia; two grandchildren, Kristina Summers Els and Kenneth Karl Summers; five great-grandchildren; a sister, June Melvin of Aberdeen; a sister-in-law, Della Montgomery of Oklahoma; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will be present 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 West Main St., Durham. Funeral Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 215 North Church St., Durham. Rev. Taylor Mills will preside. Burial in Bethesda Cemetery, Aberdeen. Gerald Warren Gibson
DURHAM — Mr. Gerald Warren Gibson, 80, passed away on July 2, 2014. He was born on April 16, 1934 in Laurinburg, NC to Archie Patterson and Gertrude Anderson Gibson. He served with the U.S. Army in Korea and then earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University. Mr. Gibson was employed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company’s Atomic Power Division, Liggett and Myers Tobacco Research Division, and Wilmore Electronics Company. He was a member of Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church for many years.
Mr. Gibson is survived by his beloved family: wife, Cammie; sons, Gerald, Jr. and wife, Maura, and Murray and wife, Melissa; and grandchildren, Alex, Will, Gracie, Matthew and Daniel.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 6, at Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Julian L. Mangum
DURHAM — Julian L. Mangum, 69, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Duke Regional Hospital. He was born in Durham County to the late Melvin Mangum and the late Mildred Blalock Mangum. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lula Holt Mangum.
Mr. Mangum is survived by his sons, Dale Mangum (Diane), David Mangum (Kathryne); daughter, Jamie Slaughter (Calvin); grandchildren, Kevin, Hailee, Tanner and Tyler Mangum and Emma, Callie and Colton Slaughter; brother, Tommy Mangum (Bennie) and fiancée, Rachel Stroupe.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Sunday at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church with Pastor Cam Ford and Rev. Marilyn Shipman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church and other times at the home of Jamie Slaughter.

Eric C. Thurheimer
DURHAM — Eric C. Thurheimer of Durham, N.C. passed away Monday, June 30, 2014. Born April 5, 1968 in Watertown, N.Y., he was the son of Dean H. and Patricia J. Thurheimer. Eric was raised in Adams Center and graduated from South Jefferson Central School in 1986. After serving in the U.S. Air Force and being honorably discharged in 1989, he was employed as a security guard and tended bar in several establishments in the Adams and Sackets Harbor, N.Y. area.
Eric moved to Durham, N.C. in 1996, where he also worked as a security guard, as a masonry project supervisor and later went back to doing what he loved, tending bar. He was most recently employed as Director of Food and Beverage at the Crossings Golf Club in Durham.
Eric is survived by his father, Dean, of Adams Center, N.Y.; three sisters, Katherine A. Thurheimer and her husband Michael Eichner of Rochester, N.Y., Keira L. Thurheimer of Adams Center, and Karen M. Thurheimer of Sackets Harbor, N.Y.; and two brothers, Kurt H. of Adams Center, and Kenneth D. of Chapel Hill, N.C. His mother, Patricia, passed away in 2011.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham.

Roy Taylor Jackson
OXFORD — Roy Taylor Jackson, 77, a lifetime resident of Granville County, passed away Thursday, July 3rd, 2014 at Universal Healthcare.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 6, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Oxford United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Haley. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Saturday evening, July 5th, 2014 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home.

Ernest McKinley Cabe, Sr.
HILLSBOROUGH — Mr. Ernest McKinley Cabe, Sr., 83, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014. He was a native of Bryson City, NC. He attended Swain County schools. He began his work at age 14 with the local dairy. He served in the armed forces stationed in Korea. After serving in the Army, he began his career working with Pike Electric and finished with Piedmont Electric after 31 years. He helped build the first rural electric line from Chapel Hill to Hillsborough.
Surviving are three sons, Dewey Altman Cabe, NY, Ernest McKinley Cabe, Jr. (Barbara), Hillsborough, and Jeffrey Garland Cabe (Jennifer), Hillsborough; six grandchildren, Ernest, Margaret, Joshua Hudson, Joshua Legget, Hannah, and Jack and his half-brother, Billy Cabe. He was predeceased by his parents, Minnie and Oscar Cabe; his wife, Joyce; two sisters, Gladys and Geneva and one daughter, Jennie.
The family will receive friends 2-4 PM Sunday at Walker’s Funeral Home.

Pearlene Nickerson Cotton
CHAPEL HILL — Ms. Pearlene Nickerson Cotton went home to be with the Lord on June 30, 2014 at the age of 93.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 12:00 noon at Jones Funeral Home, 112 S. Graham St., Chapel Hill, NC 27516. Burial will follow in Terrell's Chapel AME Zion Church, Pittsboro, N.C.

Rona Jackson Crabtree Tilley
ROUGEMONT — Rona Jackson Crabtree Tilley, age 91, of 1801 Tilley Farm Rd. died Wednesday evening at her home. Mrs. Tilley was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Crabtree and his wife Sally Taylor Crabtree. Rona was wife of the late Roger Jackson Tilley. She was a member of Red Mountain Baptist Church. Mrs. Tilley was a retired farmer on the Tilley Family Farm.
Surviving are her son Roger Tilley and wife Lisa and her daughter, Carol T. Poole, all of Rougemont; three grandchildren, Karen T. Pontier of Cary, Wesley Poole of Rougemont, and Lori Ann Holder of Timberlake; five great grandchildren, Joey & Anna Sophia Pontier, Haleigh and Addison Holder, and Austin Poole; one sister, Christine Chambers of Timberlake.
Visitation for family and friends will be Friday, July 4, 2014, 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Brooks & White Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be 3 PM Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Red Mt. Baptist Church with the Rev. David Pryor officiating. Burial will be in the Carrington Family Cemetery.

HENDERSON — John Edward Davis, 63, of 145 First Street, died Saturday morning, June 28, 2014.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday at Holy Temple Holy Church. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Viewing will be from noon to 8 pm Friday in the chapel of Davis-Royster Funeral Service and at the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 pm Friday and all other times at the residence.
