DURHAM

Burnice W. Durham
DURHAM — Mr. Burnice W. Durham, 99, son of the late Thomas W. and Lydia Jackson Durham, died Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at his home.
Mr. Durham was born and raised in Durham. He attended the Durham public schools. He proudly served his country with the Army Air Corps for four years during WWII. After his service, Mr. Durham was employed with the Durham Hosiery Mill, then retired from the U.S. Post Office after 20 years of service.
Mr. Durham is survived by his lovely wife of 75 years, Mary G. Durham; son, James B. Durham, and his wife, Elaine; granddaughter, Ashley D. Harris and her husband, Jason; two great-granddaughters, Peyton and Palmer Harris; son, Thomas B. Durham, and his wife, Karen; granddaughters, Seanna M. Durham, Erin L. Doskey, Jennifer C. Durham; great-granddaughters, Caitlin L. Whitlock, and Chase R. Oswald; sister, Lois D. Henderson, of Greensboro, NC.
Mr. Durham was preceded in death by a very special daughter, Cheryl J. Durham; brothers, Thomas W. Durham, Jr., Gilbert V. Durham; sisters, Doris Pope, Katherine Rogers, Mary Herndon, and Willie Agnes Cates.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. Officiating will be Chaplain Willis Herman. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m.
The family would like to express a special thanks to the caring staff at Duke HomeCare and Hospice.

Henry F. Hopkins
DURHAM — Mr. Henry F. Hopkins passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at the Hock Family Pavilion. Mr. Hopkins was born in Zebulon, NC to the late Joseph Hopkins, Sr. and Rena Wiggs.
Surviving relatives include four daughters, Phyllis Nee, Veronica Hopkins Garrett, Pamela Hopkins and Angela Hopkins; two step-sons, Michael Hopkins and Alfred Hopkins.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 1 pm at Pleasant Grove Church, with Dr. Classy Preston officiating. Visitation with family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service.
Services are entrusted to Scarborough and Hargett Memorial Chapel and Gardens.

Barbara Ann Rochelle
DURHAM — Barbara Ann Rochelle, 55, departed her life December 29, 2013. She leaves behind three daughters, two granddaughters, one grandson, three sisters and two brothers.
A wake will be held at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home Sunday, January 5, 2014, from 4:30 pm to 6 p.m., and funeral service will be at Mount Level Missionary Baptist Church on Monday, January 6, 2014, at noon.

Mary Ann Christian "Mac" Rogers
DURHAM — Mac Rogers passed away January 1, 2014, at The Forest at Duke after a short hospitalization and diminishing health the last year-and-a-half. She was born in Durham on May 12, 1930, to Mary Burch Christian and John Wortham Christian. She was a member of the Durham High School Class of 1948 and was a 1952 graduate of Duke University. Mac married her high school and college sweetheart, William Henry Rogers, on December 27, 1952. Henry served in the Navy; Mac worked at Home Security Life Insurance Co. In 1964, the family moved to Mexico City where they lived until 1969. Mac volunteered at the junior League Thrift Shop during these 5 years. In 1972, she began working part-time at Montaldo's in downtown Durham as a wedding coordinator and retired in 1992 as the Assistant Manager.
Mac was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church. Mac was also a member of the Junior League of Durham & Orange Counties, the House and Garden Club of Durham, the Bridge/Tennis Club and Hope Valley Country Club. She was an early supporter of Caring House, and in 2004 Mac and Henry were the Honorary Chairs of the Caring House Gala. She was an avid tennis player with a mean slam.
Mac was preceded in death by her brother, John Wortham Christian, Jr., of Richmond, VA. She is survived by her husband, William Henry Rogers; her children, Christian "Chris" Rogers Sutherland (Grant D. Sutherland, Jr.) of Thomasville, NC, and William Henry Rogers, Jr. (Ashley Sutherland Rogers) of Atlanta, GA; her grandchildren (who were very devoted to her and called her "Maccie”), Maryann Christian Loman Cash (Brian), Grant D. Sutherland, III (Carolyn) and John L. Sutherland, Heather Christian Rogers, David Henry Rogers (Morgan), Kathryn Wray Rogers and John MacDonald "Jack" Rogers. In 2012, she was thrilled to become great-grandmother to Sutherland Davis Rogers, daughter of David and Morgan. Mac is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Sarah Wray Rogers of Chapel Hill and Pauline Kittrell Christian of Richmond, VA.
Mac was known for her great wit, hospitality and open door. Friends and family knew they could drop in unannounced at any time. She loved her family and considered her grandchildren her hobby.
The family is extremely grateful for the excellent staff at the Holbrook Center (The Forest at Duke) who gave her loving and compassionate care the last year-and-a-half. The family would also like to thank Dr. Snehal Patel, the staff on the 4300 Ward of Duke Medical Center and Duke Hospice for their care during her final days. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 12, at 3:00 p.m. in the auditorium at The Forest at Duke, 2701 Pickett Rd. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Caring House, 2625 Pickett Rd., Durham, NC 27705.

June Faye Withers
DURHAM — June Faye Withers was born June 9, 1927, to Bud and Margaret Baldwin Snipes in Chatham County, NC. Mrs. Withers passed away on December 28, 2013, peacefully at her home.
She leaves to cherish her memories four daughters, Faye Robert Kearney, Shelia Smith, Margaret Robert Young and Rhonda Withers; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, at Bell Yeager Free Will Baptist Church, 128 Cornwallis Rd. A visitation with family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service.

Malcolm “Mike” Belcher
HILLSBOROUGH — Mr. Malcolm “Mike” Belcher, 68, died Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Kindred At Pettigrew Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Durham to the late Sam Belcher and the late Pansy Carden Belcher. He was also predeceased by a sister, Merita Terry. Mr. Belcher served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for Duke Power as a lineman. He retired from Durham Grading and was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.
Mr. Belcher is survived by his wife, Ann S. Belcher; daughters, Melissa Belcher, Stephanie Ray; son, Jason Belcher; grandson, Kasey Ray; sister, Judith Tilley; and brother, Curtis Belcher.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, at Clements Funeral Chapel in Hillsborough. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home and other times at his daughter’s home, 4802 Governor Umstead Circle, Efland, NC 27243.

William Coy Monk, Sr.
ROXBORO — William Coy Monk, Sr., age 81, formerly of Houston Blalock Road, died Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at the Roxboro Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He was of the Baptist Faith. Mr. Monk was son of the late Ralph Baines Monk and Vola Clayton Monk. Coy was a Air Force veteran having served his country during peacetime. He was retired from Brown and Root Company.
Surviving are his three children, Marilyn J. Goldstein and husband, Gregg, of Bristol, TN; Bill Monk and partner, Pam Mooney, Janet Lynch and husband, Bruce, all of Rougemont; six grandchildren, Jessica Lynch, Kendra Monk, Nicole Goldstein, Elena Goldstein, Travis Frazier, and Matt Glidden.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, 1:00 p.m., Saturday, at Brooks & White Chapel and at other times at the home of Barbara Jean Monk, 54 Cedar Creek Road, Timberlake, NC 27583.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Brooks & White Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Pulliam and the Rev. Brian Hager officiating.
