Evelyn Umstead Clarke
DURHAM — Mrs. Evelyn Umstead Clarke, died Sunday afternoon at Hock Family Pavilion.
Mrs. Clarke was born in Bahama, NC on May 17, 1918 to the late Henry Lee and Emma Harris Umstead. She was educated in the Durham County Schools and attended Croft Business School. She was a member of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church and a member of the Fidelis Sunday school class. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women at Bethany Church in Durham. For over 20 years, she was the pianist for the Sunday school as well as Hillcrest Convalescent Center.
Mrs. Clarke is survived by her nieces, Charlotte Tippett and Jane C. Boersma; nephews, David, Michael, Kevin, and Conley Umstead; sister-in-law, Melba J. Umstead; and several great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Clarke was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas B. Clarke.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, at 1:00pm at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Grace Hackney. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors prior to the service, from 11-1pm, in the church fellowship hall.

Wilma Deane Cook Coates
DURHAM — Mrs. Wilma Deane Cook Coates, 86, of Durham died on Sunday, December 29, 2013. She was a native and lifelong resident of Durham, the daughter of the late Edward Cook and Ella O’Briant Cook. She was a member of Lowes Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Coates.
She is survived by her two sons, Steven M. Coates of Stem and Roger T. Coates of Oxford; her daughter, Cynthia Dixon (Don) of Durham; and granddaughter, Emily C. Dixon.
A private memorial service is planned for a later date. The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at Croasdaile Pavilion 2nd floor for the love and care they provided. Edna Wright Taylor
DURHAM — Edna Wright Taylor, 80, departed this life on December 24, 2013. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, two sisters, one brother and a host of nieces and nephews.
Family visitation and viewing will be at 11am with services at 12 noon on January 2 at Antioch Baptist Church, 1415 Holloway Street.

Courtney Mae Edwards
CARRBORO — Courtney Mae Edwards, 89, entered into eternal rest on Chistmas Eve, Tuesday, December 24,2013. She is survived by her sister, Argie Jones; two devoted daughters, Carolyn E.Stroud and Selma Fay Lyons; and a host of other relatives.
Her homegoing services will be held at 1 pm, Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at St. Joseph C.M.E. Church, 510 West Rosemary St., Chapel Hill, NC, with visitation one-half hour prior to the service. Arrangements by Jones Funeral Home.
