Ernest Herbert Brinson
DURHAM - Ernest Herbert Brinson, known as Herb, died peacefully in his sleep the morning of December 7 at Hillcrest Convalescent Center. He had turned 92 on November 16.
Herb was born in Rankin County, Mississippi, to Ernest Brinson and Iris Summers Brinson. He attended school in Florence, Mississippi, and received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Mississippi State University. During World War II, he was a Marine, serving in a communications unit in the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific. Following Japan’s surrender, he and other members of the 1st Marine Division were sent to China.
In 1947, Herb married Minnie Lee Sheffield (known to some friends as Micki and to others as Lee). Herb and Micki had two children, Judy Dianne (Dianne) and Gary Ernest. The family lived in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Kentucky before moving to Durham in late 1966. Herb was an electrical engineer for IBM for thirty-four years, retiring in 1985. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and growing vegetables in his large vegetable garden.
Micki died on October 20, 2013. Gary died in 2003. Herb is survived by his sister, Christine Brinson Hogg, of Mississippi, and by his daughter, Dianne Brinson, and Dianne’s husband, Mark Radcliffe, of Portola Valley, California. He is also survived by “informally-adopted local family” Martha (Marty) Gagliano, Michael Novak, and Matthew Novak (who called Herb and Micki “Grandpa Herb” and “Grandma Micki”).
A celebration of the lives of Micki and Herb Brinson will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Yates Baptist Church.
Dianne and Mark invite everyone to join them at 12:30 that day for a buffet lunch in the Vista Restaurant of the Washington Duke Inn. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Yates Baptist Church, 2819 Chapel Hill Road, Durham, NC 27707.

Harry Adams Pickett
DURHAM - Harry Adams Pickett, 89, of Durham, N.C., passed away on December 11, 2013, in Matthews, North Carolina at Carrington Place.
Harry was born and educated in Durham County. He was preceded in death by Dorothy (Dot) Dennis Pickett, his loving wife of more than 60 years. Together they owned and operated Pickett’s Catering Company for many years. He was an active member of Yates Baptist Church.
Left to cherish his memory is a son, Wayne Pickett and wife Carolyn of Valrico, Fla.; daughters Phyllis Medlin and husband Mike of Monroe, N.C., and Annette Williams and husband Ronnie of Franklin, Va.; grandchildren Jonathan Pickett, Michael Pickett (Stacey), Matthew Medlin (Terilynn), Mark Medlin, Bryan Medlin (Brenda), Shannon Medlin, Martha Marks, and Edward Marks; great-grandchildren Jordyn, Riley, Kennedy Pickett; Brooke, Bailey, Codi, Sam, Allie Jo and Ava Marie Medlin; and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive visitors Monday, December 16, between 1 and 2 p.m. prior to a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Yates Baptist Church, 2819 Chapel Hill Road, Durham, N.C. Officiating will be Rev. John Frederick. Interment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Yates Baptist Building Fund, or the charity of your choice.

Cynthia Gary Jones
DURHAM — Cynthia Gary Jones, 51, departed her life on Tuesday, December 10, 2013. She is survived by her mother Ida Mae Lawton Gary; two daughters Chelsea and Olivia Jones of the home; three sisters and a brother, and a host of special aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces, and cousins and friends.
Services are Monday December 16, 2013 at 1:00 pm with a visitation one hour prior to the service at Victory at Calvary Covenant Ministries. Arrangements entrusted to Holloway Memorial Funeral Home.

Roberta Marie Sheeley
DURHAM - Roberta Marie (Pookie) Sheeley, 48, departed life as we know it early Wednesday morning, December 11, 2013.
She leaves to cherish her memory her fiancé, Daniel McClary; her parents, Larry and Hilda Sheeley Keith; a step-sister, Tiffany Keith; special nephew, Bobby Tucker; godsister, Angelina Jackson, all of Durham, N.C.
Services will be held at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home, Monday, December 16, at 1 p.m. with visitation at 12 noon.

Paul E. Watkins
DURHAM — Paul E. Watkins, 95, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2013, at Spring Arbor of Durham.
A lifelong resident of Durham, he was the son of the late Newton B. Watkins, Sr. and Addie Partin Watkins. Paul graduated from Bethesda High School in 1938 and proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army Air Forces. He was a member of Angier Avenue Baptist Church and retired from a long career with the National Cash Register Company.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Helen Mann Watkins, as well as his sister and four brothers.
Paul is survived by his daughter, Paulette W. Inscoe; granddaughter, Wendy Inscoe; grandson, Mike Inscoe, Jr. and wife Heather; and four great-grandchildren, Dustin Allen, Morgan Allen, Avery Inscoe and Logan Inscoe.
A visitation will be held Sunday, December 15, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. The family will have a private service at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite church or charity. A simple act of kindness this holiday season would be a fitting tribute. Online condolences may be made at
