Azona M. Allen
DURHAM — Azona M. Allen, 96, departed this life on December 16, 2013. She was the owner and operator of the Green Candle Restaurant in Durham for 45 years. She was one of the pioneers of the historic Hayti Business District. She leaves behind two nieces, Evangeline McDaniel and Cordelia Holloway-Davis, and one nephew, Gale Holloway. Funeral service will be Saturday, December 21, 2013, with a viewing at noon and funeral at 1 p.m. at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home.

Artis Kent Clayton
DURHAM — Artis Kent Clayton, 64, departed this life on December 16, 2013. He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Zelphia Lipscomb-Clayton; two sons; one daughter; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two brothers; one sister; one aunt and one uncle.
Funeral service will be held at Bell Yeager Free Will Baptist Church on Saturday December 21, 2013, at 1 p.m. Visitation at noon.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Holloway Memorial Funeral Home.

Jennie Mae Freeman Dixon
DURHAM — Jennie Mae Freeman Dixon, 99, made her transition peacefully surrounded by loving family on December 14, 2013, at her home in Flower Mound, Texas.
Jennie Mae leaves her children to cherish her memory, Carolyn Dixon McQuiller of Durham, N.C.; Kenneth Dixon (Verlancy) of Keller, Texas; Robert D. Dixon (Alverta) of Flower Mound, Texas; Willie “Butch” Dixon (Virginia) of Lillington, N.C.; 29 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
A celebration of Jennie Mae’s life will be held on Sunday, December 22, 2013. Viewing 12 to 1 p.m. at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home, 2502 NC Highway 55, Durham, N.C. Service will be held at Peace Missionary Baptist Church, 2608 Apex Highway (NC Highway 55), Durham, N.C., at 1:30 p.m., Rev. William E. Daye officiating. Annie “Bonnie” Gilliam Paschall
DURHAM — Mrs. Annie “Bonnie” Gilliam Paschall, 67, of Durham died on Friday, December 13, 2013. She was a native and lifelong resident of Durham. She retired from Walmart as an Invoice Clerk. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother.
She is survived by her husband, Edward “Eddie” Paschall, one step-son, Phillip Paschall of Killeen Texas; her nephew who she raised, Lonnie Gilliam, two half brothers, Robert Gilliam of Oxford and Edward Gilliam of Durham, one granddaughter, Shayln Paschall, two grandsons, Hunter Gilliam and Trevor Johnson.
Memorial service will be held on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Rev. Hugh O’Shields will officiate.

ORANGE
John Thomas Edelen Sr.
CHAPEL HILL — John Thomas Edelen Sr., age 93, of Chapel Hill, N.C., passed away peacefully on December 18, 2013.
He was born to the late Hanora and Leo Edelen, December 8, 1920. Tom graduated from the University of Louisville, Ky., with a BA in Engineering. He was a World War II Navy veteran, who served in the South Pacific.
He was married to the late Auda Elaine Wolf in 1944 and they lived in Durham, N.C., until her death in 1995.
Tom was an engineer with Dravo Corporation until he retired in the late 1970s. He was passionate about his country and an avid volunteer for the Republican party. He was a founding member of the Durham chapter of SCORE, a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. He was an Honorable Elder of Kiwanis and a volunteer at the Eno River Assocation; instrumental in the re-building of the Mill at West Point on the Eno.
Tom was an active member of St.Thomas More Church and the Knights of Columbus. He loved to tell stories, especially if he could make you laugh; he knew no strangers.
Mr. Edelen is survied by his four children: Dr. Ann Churchil Banes; Mr. John Thomas Edelen, Jr.; Ms. Sherrill Edelen and Ms. Jean Edelen. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to Disabled Veterans of America and Catholic charities through St. Thomas More church.
Funeral services will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill, N.C., at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2013. Internment to follow at St. Thomas More columbarium.

Michael Mayo
HILLSBOROUGH — Michael Mayo, 64, of Hillsborough, N.C., died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at the Veterans Hospital in Durham, N.C.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday with family visitation 12 until 1 p.m. in Mt. Bright Baptist Church, 211 W. Union Street, Hillsborough, NC 27278.
Surviving are his mother, Thelma Mayo of Hillsborough, N.C.; three daughters, Rhonda Mayo of Matthews, N.C., Michelle Sykes-Parker of Burlington, N.C., and Secret Mayo of Englewood, Calif.; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and other family members.
Interment at 4123 Carr Store Road, Cedar Grove, N.C., located across from White Oak Primitive (Progressive) Baptist Church.
Public viewing 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday in Chavis-Parker Funeral Home. Family receiving friends at 203 Lakeshore Drive, Hillsborough, N.C.
