Virginia Lynch Bryant
DURHAM — Mrs. Virginia Lynch Bryant, 93, of Durham, died on Friday, January 24, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Fred Baird Lynch and Nellie Moore Lynch. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church since 1961 and taught Sunday School there for over thirty-five years. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Woodrow Bryant.
She was survived by four daughters, Carolyn Gilreath of Greenville, S.C.; Faye Pickens (John) of Durham, Gail Smith (Ray) of Durham and Brenda McClintock (Scott) of Durham; five grandchildren, Bill Smith, Steve Smith, Tina Dail, Cindy King and Connie Buchanan; eleven great-grandchildren, Taylor Melton, Timothy Dail, Christopher King, Tucker Smith, Philip Dail, Melissa King, Sidney Smith, Kaitlyn King, Stephen Dail, Jaclyn Dail and Kathryn Dail.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church. Dr. Rick Finley, Dr. Lonnie Graves and Rev. Kevin Dail will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Brock King, Ricky Buchanan, Darrell Slaughter, James Slaughter, Ray Ellis, Ricky Oakley and Bud Parton.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. Flowers are acceptable or donations can be made to Fellowship Baptist Church, 515 Southerland St., Durham, NC 27703. Online condolences can be made at www.hudsonfuneralhome.com.
Ruby Mae Gongs
DURHAM — Ruby Mae Gongs was born to Charlie and Mary Lawrence on June 18, 1918 in Creedmoor, NC. After a long stay at Carver Living Center she entered holy eternity on January 22, 2014. A Celebration of life service will be held Monday, January 27, 2014, with viewing at 11 a.m. and service at 12 noon at First Calvary Baptist Church, located at 1311 Morehead Ave., Durham, NC. Services are entrusted to Scarborough and Hargett Memorial Chapel and Gardens.
Dorothy Compton Simpson
CHAPEL HILL — Longtime Carol Woods resident Dorothy Deane Compton Simpson, 97-1/2, died peacefully Sunday, January 19, 2014 in the Carol Woods Health Center following a short illness. She was born July 13, 1916 in Newton, Mass. to James and Minnie Rushforth Compton. She was a graduate of Hartwick College and achieved a Master's Degree from NY University. Dot was an energetic high school math teacher and also served as chairman of her department in Mahopac School in Putnam County, NY. She married The Rev. H. Pierce Simpson on December 17, 1949 in Carmel, NY. He preceded her in death on November 16, 1968.
After moving to Chapel Hill following her retirement, she enjoyed travel and took full benefit of these opportunities for adventure. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, appreciated quality music, and sang in the Binkley Church Choir for many years. Her bright smile and delightful conversations will long be remembered.
Dot is survived by her husband’s family members: step-daughters-in-law Priscilla Simpson and Edith Simpson, grandchildren Sue Simpson, Brian Simpson and Pickett Tait Simpson, Jr. She also is survived by some distant cousins.
Celebration of Mrs. Simpson’s life will be held at 7 PM Monday, January 27, 2014 at Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church.
