Annie Suggs Holt
DURHAM — Annie Suggs Holt was born in Coats, N.C., May 21, 1913 and passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2014. She is survived by three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, a half-sister, three nieces, and two nephews. Her final resting place will be in the family plot at Hodges Chapel, Coats, N.C. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice Amedisys, 2609 Duke St., Suite 102, Durham, NC 27704.

Walter Clyde McNair
DURHAM — Walter Clyde McNair, 91, departed this life on May 19, 2014.
He leaves behind his dear friends, Barbara J. Alston, Linwood Stewart (Stew) and his NCSSM Family.
A viewing will be held at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday from 1:00 to 7:00 pm. Services will be Friday at 11:00 am at Markham Memorial Gardens.

Florrie Smythe Mercer
DURHAM — Florrie Smythe Mercer, 93, a resident of Croasdaile Village, Durham, North Carolina, died on May 13, 2014. Mrs. Mercer was born on February 23, 1921, and was the daughter of Floyd Ira Smythe and Velma McManus Smythe, of Fort Mill, South Carolina.
She is survived by the Reverend Doctor Charles H. Mercer, her husband of 70 years; their two children, Mary Smythe Mercer, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Charles H. Mercer, Jr. and wife, Alene, also of Raleigh; and three grandchildren, Allison Mercer Maslow and husband, Nick, of Raleigh, Charles H. Mercer, III, of Raleigh, and Daniel Lee Mercer, also of Raleigh. She also is survived by a sister, Sara Belle Smythe Scott, and brother, Thomas I. Smythe, both of Fort Mill, South Carolina.
Florrie entered the University of Alabama at the age of 16. After two years, she transferred to Duke University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1942. While at Duke, Florrie met Charles, a student at Duke Divinity School. They were married on August 27, 1943, and enjoyed a marriage of 70 years.
Through the 59 years that her husband served as a United Methodist pastor in North Carolina, Florrie was an integral part of that ministry. She was a faithful and dedicated volunteer in the churches that Charles served, with her greatest interest being her work with young people through the United Methodist Youth Fellowship and other ministries. She worked in the local church, served as an adult leader at youth assemblies and camps sponsored by the United Methodist Church, and organized many events and trips for junior high and high school students.
In 1988, Charles and Florrie moved to Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. Florrie became an active leader in Andean Rural Health Care, where she worked with their mission program to help meet health needs of rural people in Bolivia. She participated in mission trips to Bolivia to work directly with the people and understand their medical needs.
In 1996, Florrie was awarded the North Carolina Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. In 1997, the town of Montero, Bolivia declared May 9, as “Florrie S. Mercer” Day in honor of her medical mission work and ministry.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014, 11:00 a.m., at the William Preston Few Chapel, Croasdaile Village, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Durham, North Carolina, visitation to follow. Private interment for family members will be at the Regan United Methodist Church, Lumberton, North Carolina.

Florence Leigh Burgess Scott
DURHAM — Florence Leigh Burgess Scott of Durham, N.C. passed away on Friday, May 16, 2014.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Flossie and Mohamed B. Sowe, Sr. of Clayton, N.C.; her father, Frank E. Burgess, Sr. of Durham, N.C.; three brothers, Frank E. Burgess, Jr. (Darlene) of Durham, N.C., Fasari T. Burgess (Erica) of Raleigh, N.C., and Mohamed B. Sowe, Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Felecia B. Martin (Alphaeus) of Durham, N.C.; three nieces, Alicia Jade Martin, Kaya Jordann Smith-Burgess, and Mia Grace Burgess; one nephew, Alphaeus E. Martin Jr.
She is also survived by two maternal uncles, Herman Graham, Jr. (Pinkey Faye) of Durham, N.C., and Robert D. Graham (Rondale) of Mary Ester, Florida; two maternal aunts, Dollie G. Hinch (Dennis) of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Deanna G. Wilson (Kenneth) of Durham, N.C.; three paternal aunts, Dorothy B. Boler of Reidsville, N.C., Mae Evelyn Burgess of Durham, N.C., and Shirley B. Crews of Rochester, New York; one paternal uncle, Ronald E. Burgess of Durham, N.C. She also leaves a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be held at North East Missionary Baptist Church, 3204 Hwy. 55, Durham, NC 27713 on Friday, May 23, 2014. Viewing will be at 12:00 pm and the funeral will be at 1:00 pm.

CHATHAM

Betty Jane Hoey Rowland
PITTSBORO — Betty Jane Hoey Rowland, 90, died Sunday, May 18, 2014 at Chatham Hospital in Siler City, NC.
She was born on Sept. 30, 1923 in Beavers County, PA, daughter of the late George E. Hoey and Ann Jane Price Hoey. She was married to Wallace Lee Rowland for nearly 60 years until his death in 2010.
Mrs. Rowland served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corps during WWII. After the war, she spent a number of years working for the Wake County Health Department before moving on to Burlington Mills in Durham, NC, then finally at NC Memorial Hospital. From 1996-1997, she was appointed as the first woman in NC to the position of State Commander of the VFW. She was a life member of the National VFW, a life member of the National American Legion and a life member of the National AMVETS organization.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Rowland is preceded in death by her daughter, Lynn Rae Dean.
She is survived by her son, Jeffrey I. Rowland of Pittsboro; her daughters, Bonnell Jane R. Pitzer and her husband, L. Edward Pitzer, of Fremont, NC and Christine R. Anthony of Gastonia, NC; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1-4:00PM Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 396 West St., Pittsboro, NC.

Joy Delyna Middleton
CREEDMOOR — Joy Delyna Middleton, 93, a longtime resident of Creedmoor, passed away at Carver Living Center on May 20, 2014. She was born in Guilford County on August 28, 1920 to the late Charlie and Jesse Simpson Winfree and was the widow of Clynard Hutton Middleton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of forty six years, C.H., and sisters Louise Bailey, Eazora Cummings, Carolyn Jones and Mattie Belle Washburn; brothers, Herman, Houston and James Winfree.
She is survived by her sons, James Middleton (Libby) of Richmond, Virginia, and Jerry Middleton (Faye) of Creedmoor; daughters, Joyce Daniel (Jerry) of Creedmoor and JoAnn Middleton of Cary; sisters, Mary Sue Hawkins, Shirley Sharpe, Viola Smith, Dot Winfree (sister-in-law) and Joshua Jones (brother-in-law); six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Joy was a dedicated homemaker, faithful servant of the Lord, a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. After moving away from the Greensboro area, nothing made her happier than to have get-togethers with her extended family. She was a member of the Living Word Baptist Church and enjoyed attending the Senior Center in Creedmoor for many years.
Funeral services will be held at the Living Word Baptist Church, 1155 Green Road, Creedmoor on Thursday, May 22nd at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Jacelyn Jones and Reverend Mike Vaughan officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband at Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions may be made to a memorial fund at Living Word Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1172, Creedmoor, NC 27522.
Pallbearers will be Charles Daniel, Travis Getz, Kris Overstreet, Brad Middleton, Greg Middleton and Elliott Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Getz, Graham Getz, Austin Overstreet, and Christian Wilson.

CHAPEL HILL — Pauline McGirt, 89, passed away on May 16, 2014, at Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm, and four sisters.
A service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 23, at the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery.

Rosalee Buchanan Harris
ROXBORO — Rosalee Buchanan Harris, age 88, of 1301 Todd Road, Roxboro, NC died Tuesday morning May 20, 2014 at Person Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Harris was a native of Person County, NC, daughter of the late Elbert & Addie Belle Buchanan and wife of 26 years to the late George Irvin Harris. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and homemaker, retired from Roxboro Manufacturing and was a lifetime member of Providence Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher and sang in the choir.
Surviving are a daughter, Rosie H. Kirby & husband, Tracy, of Roxboro; two sons, Ronald Harris & wife, Dianna, of Roxboro, Rev. Donald Harris & wife, Betty, of Timberlake; sister, Phyllis Pool of Durham; five grandchildren, Teresa Griffen, Deborah Snow, Michael Kirby, Matthew Kirby, Amaris Kirby; four great-grandchildren, Jake Snow, Taylor Snow, Megan Griffen, Brock Griffen; caregiver & friend, Jeanette Brooks; and pets, Baby & Felix.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Harris is preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Ivey, Musette New; two brothers, Rev. Jerrel Buchanan, William Buchanan; and adopted daughter, Tracey Turner.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2014 at Providence Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis McDonald. Interment will follow in the Burchwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 till 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Providence Baptist Church and other times at the home.
