DURHAM

Cecil Parks Brook

DURHAM — Cecil Parks Brook, 85, died Saturday, May 17, 2014 at his home in Durham after a long illness.
Born January 14, 1929 in Greensboro, Georgia Cecil spent his
adolescence years and early adulthood in Oxford and Creedmoor. He was educated in the Granville County schools. He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Working over 30 years at Duke University, he retired from the Office of Technology in 1995.
Cecil was predeceased by his wife Gloria Byrd Brook of 47 years; brothers, Garland and Orasho (O.B.) sister Ruth Huff and his parents, Orasho and Mary Anna Parks Brook.
Cecil is survived by his son, Daniel Parks Brook of Durham; daughter Ann Brook Ayers (Adam) of Albany NY; two granddaughters, Amelia Brook Ayers and Louisa Mae Ayers of Albany, NY; his sister, Catherine B. Tippett of Oxford, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Cressett Baptist Church, Rev. Jon Glass and Rev. Dr. Ned Mathews officiating. Burial, with military rites will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ron Williamson, Clyde Williams, Francis Sullivan, Jody High, John Workman, and Ben Dollar.
In honor of the wonderful care provided by Transitions Life Care, (founded as Hospice of Wake County) the family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Transistions, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607
The family will receive visitors at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Willie Warren Howell
DURHAM — Willie Warren Howell, Sr., 61, departed his life on May 16, 2014. He leaves to cherish his memory five daughters, one son, nine grandchildren, four sisters, two brothers, two aunts and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday at Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Butner, NC, with a viewing at 1:00 pm.

Betty Jane Hoey Rowland

PITTSBORO — Betty Jane Hoey Rowland, 90, died Sunday, May 18, 2014 at Chatham Hospital in Siler City, NC.
She was born on Sep 30, 1923 in Beavers County, PA, daughter of the late George E. Hoey and Ann Jane Price Hoey. She was married to Wallace Lee Rowland for nearly 60 years until his death in 2010.
Mrs. Rowlandserved as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corps during WWII. After the war, she spent a number of years working for the Wake County Health Department before moving on to Burlington Mills in Durham, NC, then finally at NC Memorial Hospital. From 1996-1997, she was appointed as the first woman in NC, to the position of State Commander of the VFW. She was a life member of the National VFW, a life member of the National American Legion and a life member of the National AMVETS organization.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Rowland is preceded in death by her daughter, Lynn Rae Dean.
She is survived by her son Jeffrey I. Rowland of Pittsboro; her daughters Bonnell Jane R. Pitzer and her husband, L. Edward Pitzer, of Fremont, NC and Christine R. Anthony of Gastonia, NC; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1-4:00PM Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 396 West St., Pittsboro, NC.

Terry Jones Poythress

CHAPEL HILL — Terry Jones Poythress, age 56, of Chapel Hill, NC died Sunday May 18, 2014 after a year-long battle with cancer. She was born January 27, 1958 in Sanford, NC. She worked at UNC for 25 years.
Terry was a choir director at Damascus Church for several years and had fulfilled many roles there. She was also very active in her community. Her hobbies included reading and her love for cats.
Terry is survived by her husband, Phil Poythress; her parents, Bruce and Myrtle Jones of Moncure, NC; her daughter, Jessica Renee Poythress of the home; her brothers Ray and his wife Wenona Jones of Marston, NC and Phillip Jones of Moncure; and her sister-in-law, Anne, with her husband Charles Barry Burns of Chapel Hill.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2014 from 6-8:00PM at Hall Wynne Funeral Services in Pittsboro, NC. A funeral service will be held 2:00PM Wednesday, May 21, at Damascus Congregational Church in Chapel Hill, NC.

Etta Marie Gullie
FLORIDA — Etta Marie Gullie, 84, of Lake Wales, Florida passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale, Florida. She was preceded in death by Janet Faye, Janice Faith and Michael Dean.
She was born November 13, 1929 in Durham, NC to the late Festus H. and Mary A. (Smith) Peterson. In 1978 she moved from Tallahassee, FL, later relocating to Lake Wales, FL. She was a homemaker, a member of First United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women’s Group and Belle Johnson Circle within the church. She enjoyed music, crocheting, watching ice skating and talent shows. Marie was a very enjoyable woman who was loved by everyone.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, William Winston Gullie; sons, Terry Lynn Gullie of Lake Wales, FL, Gary Vaughn Gullie, Sr. and wife, Vilma Villacorta Gullie of Warner Robins, GA; sister, Mary Gladys Peterson Harris of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter, Michelle Marie Gullie of Warner Robins, GA; and step grandson, Gary Vaughn Gullie also of Warner Robins, GA.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday at Maplewood Cemetery. No visitation is planned.

LADY'S ISLAND, SC - Funeral Services for Mrs. Helen McCann Rearden Thompson, 86, of Sunrise Blvd, Lady’s Island, SC, who entered into rest on Sunday, May 18th, 2014, will be on Wednesday at 2 o’clock at Langley United Methodist Church, Langley, SC. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Graniteville, SC. Mrs. Thompson retired as Vice President of Crum & Forster, Durham, NC. The family will greet friends on Wednesday from 12:30 until 1:30 at the Hatcher Funeral Home and Cremation, Langley, SC.
