Orpah Turrentine King
DURHAM — Mrs. Orpah Turrentine King, 90, passed quietly on Sunday at Duke Regional Hospital. Mrs. King was born in Durham, the daughter of the late Aubrey Daniel and Jesse Rice Turrentine. The proprietor of King’s Red and White, Mrs. King was preceded in death by her husband, William Brinkley King, Sr. Mrs. King graduated from Durham High School in 1942 and shortly thereafter married her soul mate. For 58 years she could be found everyday but Sunday at King’s Red and White. Known for her kindness and generous spirit, she will be dearly missed by her family and the Braggtown community.
She is survived by sons, William Brinkley King, Jr. (Babs) of Timberlake and Ronnie King (Mary Gilbert) of Durham; grandchildren, William B. King, III (Jessica Anne) of Hillsborough, Courtney King Smith (Don Michael) of Timberlake, Emma King Doyle (Sam) of Georgetown, SC, Jenny D’Amato (Dan) of Raleigh, Chris Carrigan (Heather) and Michael Carrigan; great-grandchildren, Logan Byrd, Elsie D’Amato, Bryce Parker Smith, Lila Doyle, London King, Daneya, Caroline, and Jase Carrigan, Kayle and Mason Riley, and Nyla Bennett.
Funeral services will be held Thursday 11 a.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with the Rev. Jessie Larkins officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Eugene Pearson Turner
DURHAM — Mr. Eugene Pearson Turner passed on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Peak Resources Treyburn.
Mr. Turner, son of the late Dr. Israel Ezra Turner, Sr. and Mrs. Minnie P. Turner Spaulding, was born in Durham, North Carolina on September 19, 1940.
He attended the public schools of Durham and graduated from Hillside High School in 1958. After completing a semester at Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia, he enlisted in the United States Air Force from which he was honorably discharged after four years of service. Following his military service, he enrolled at North Carolina Central University from which he received a bachelor's degree in history in 1969.
Mr. Turner was first employed at Operation Breakthrough and later at IBM from which he retired after several years of dedicated service.
Eugene's retirement afforded him an excellent opportunity to concentrate on those areas which demonstrated his diverse talents. As a master craftsman, he built or otherwise restored kitchens, bathrooms, cabinets, and furniture. As a photographer, he gave such careful attention to details that he was often called upon to render service at weddings and other social functions. As a guitarist, he and the other members of his group often provided music for different events.
Eugene is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mrs. Vera Francis Turner of Durham, NC; a daughter, Mrs. Nicole Turner Patillo (Kevin); a grandson, Zion Isaiah Patillo, all of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, Mr. Israel E. Turner, Jr. of Sacramento, CA and Mr. James M. Turner of Durham, NC; one stepbrother, Mr. Charles C. Spaulding, III of Oakland, CA; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Charlesetta G. Turner of Sacramento, CA and Ms. Renee D. Francis of Indian Head, MD; one brother-in-law, Mr. Willis W. Francis, Jr. of Havelock, NC; two nieces, Ms. Lisa R. Turner and Mrs. Regina T. Brown, both of Sacramento, CA; five nephews, Mr. Michael K. Turner, Mr. Rodney D. Turner, Mr. Bryan P. Turner, Mr. Jerome S. Turner and Mr. Richard I. Turner, all of Sacramento, CA; and several grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins, including Mrs. Geraldine Turner Crooms of Raleigh, NC.
Throughout his life, and especially during his adult years, Eugene developed many friendships. The following list, which is by no means exhaustive, represents those persons whom Eugene was privileged to know: Dr. James S. Lee Jr., Mrs. Dorothea Barnes, Robin and Joseph Featherstone and children, Mr. Donald Baker, Attorney Cecily P. Smith, Mrs. Marie Shaw Simmons, Mr. Lonnie Simmons, Carolyn and James W. Barnes, Mr. Thomas Love, Mr. Alvis O. "Butch" Grady, Mr. Perry E. Lambeth, Attorney Eric C. Michaux, Mr. Wallace M. Toole, Mr. Milford Williams, Dr. David B. Cooke, III, and Mr. Edward Bailey.
Eugene will be best remembered for his love for his fellow man and his love for animals.
At Eugene's request, there will be no memorial service.

Evelyn Fonville Wilson
DURHAM — Evelyn Fonville Wilson, 89, died Sunday in Carolina Point. A Durham native, she was the daughter of the late James and Vera Johnson Fonville.
She was educated in the Durham City Schools and was a longtime active member of Epworth United Methodist Church. Evelyn was employed with Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. as a secretary and later became a stay-at-home mom.
Surviving are her son, Robin Wilson of Durham; one sister, Faynelle Spears of Oxford; and a granddaughter, Amanda Wilson. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Haygood Wilson, Jr., and a brother, David "Chocolate" Fonville.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in Epworth United Methodist. Officiating will be the Rev. Hope A. Vickers.
Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, section 17.
The family will receive visitors at the church from 10:00 until 11:00 in the church parlor, prior to the service.

Charlie Mebane Vanhook
MEBANE — Charlie Mebane Vanhook, 90 died Sunday, August 10, 2014, at Veterans Hospital Hospice Division in Salisbury, N.C. He was born Wednesday, October 31, 1923, to the late Daniel Vanhook and the late Madeline Parker Vanhook.
The funeral will be held 2:00 P.M.Thursday at Mt. Zion AME Church with family visitation one hour before the funeral service. Burial in Mt. Zion AME Church Cemetery.
Surviving are sons, Scottie Jeffery Vanhook (Sabrina) of Sanford, NC, Mark Myrth Vanhook of Durham, NC and Steven Fitzgerald Vanhook (Joy) of Dunn, NC; daughters, Netherlan Theresa Davis (Anthony) of East Spencer, NC, Sophia Faye Wilkins (Larry) of Mebane, NC, Melody Rosalyn Nance of Salisbury, NC, Beverly Gail Gainey (Kellie) of Rock Hill, NC and Leslie Michelle Vanhooke (Miguel "Michael") of Sanford, NC; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Josephine Poole, Annie Bell Paige and Aggie Poole.
Family is receiving friends at the home of Josephine Poole, 3300 Gunn Poole Road, Mebane, NC. Public viewing in Chavis-Parker Funeral Chapel Wednesday, 10:00 AM until 7:00 PM, with family receiving friends 3:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home.
Janet Page Phipps Keller
MORRISVILLE — Janet Page Phipps Keller, 79, of Morrisville died on Monday, August 11, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Phipps and Betty Page Phipps. She retired from RTI. She attended Good Hope Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Keller.
She is survived by two daughters, Tonya Steele of Apex and Marcelle Riley of Morrisville; one sister, Joanne Sours of Colorado; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Pastor Glenn Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
