Barbara Ann Lewis Brooks
DURHAM — Barbara Ann Lewis Brooks, the daughter of Robert and Arnetta Turrentine Lewis, was born on March 26, 1943. She departed this life on July 31, 2014 at Duke Medical Center after a very brief illness.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-three years, Nathaniel Brooks Sr., of the home; a son, Daryl Brooks of Durham, NC and a “special son,” Rodney Rodgers of Timberlake, NC; grandchildren, Cameron, Daryl Jr., Nicholas, and Chyna; an extended family of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on August 9, 2014 at Mt. Calvary United Church of Christ, Rev. Cheryl McNair officiating. The visitation will begin at 12:00 noon and a memorial service will follow at 1:00.

Artelia Tennesee Bryant
DURHAM — Artelia Tennesee Bryant, 93, of Durham, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 4, 2014 at her residence. Born in Phoebus, Va. (Hampton), Mrs. Bryant was the daughter of John Jesse Tennessee and Artelia Darden Tennessee. She is survived by her spouse of nearly 70 years, R. Kelly Bryant Jr.; children, Sandra Bryant-Yubwannie and Robert K. Bryant III; grandchildren, Keith Bryant, Korey Bryant, Raevin Bryant, Mykel Bryant-Moore and Yohanna Yubwannie; 4 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Maggie P. Bryant; and a host of other dear family members.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, at White Rock Baptist Church located at 3400 Fayetteville Street, Durham, NC, with Pastor Reginald Van Stephens officiating.

Aaron Evans
DURHAM — Aaron Evans, 61, departed this earthly life on Tuesday morning, August 5, 2014. He is survived by his mother, Geraldine Evans, and his daughter.
Funeral services will be held at Emmanuel AME Church, 2018 Riddle Rd., Durham, on Saturday, August 9; visitation at 12 noon followed by the homegoing service at 1:00 pm.

James Edward Floyd
DURHAM — James Edward Floyd was born to the late Alvester Floyd and Lillie Mae Thompson on April 20, 1934 in Lumberton, NC. He was affectionately known as "Pop" to family and friends. James E. Floyd slept away peacefully on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at Duke University Hospital.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories four daughters, one sister, three nieces, eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be today, August 7, 2014, at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home; viewing at 1:00 pm with services at 2:00pm.

Joel Tyree Jones
DURHAM — Joel Tyree Jones passed July 26, 2014. Born in Durham, Joel was the son of the late Alvis Earl Jones and Dorothy Cawthorne Jones Pazzaglini.
He is survived by his brother, Peter Earl Jones and wife Pamela Ann; nephew, David Earl Jones; and niece, Dawn Marie Jones.
Joel was a graduate of Northern High School, a lifelong musician, former employee of the Music Loft, and a bass player with The Nomads.
Friends and fellow musicians will gather to honor Joel at a later date.

Ella Mae Alston Pratt
DURHAM — Mrs. Ella Mae Alston Pratt, 95, of 3826 Missell Avenue, died Monday, August 4, 2014 at her home. Her service will be conducted at 12pm on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Fisher Memorial United Holy Church, 420 E. Piedmont Ave. Interment will follow in Glennview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 11am-12pm one hour prior to the service.
Mrs Pratt is survived by her children, William N. Pratt, Jr., Margaret P. Myles, Edythe A. Ferguson, James L. Pratt, Apostle Sandra P. Clariett and Beverly P. Ebron.

Charles Thompson
CARY — Charles Thompson, 75, passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Duke University Hospital. He was born in Selma, to the late Roland Carl Thompson and Zelda Inez Thompson and moved to Durham at a young age. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Thompson, and sister, Peggy T. Williams.
Mr. Thompson was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was formerly employed with Sears & Roebuck, Montgomery Ward and later co-owner of Golden Touch Carpet. Charles was an entrepreneur of business who never met a stranger. He had a passion for collecting antiques and novelty items as well as a love for golf, baseball and playing for the U.S. Navy Team in Japan.
Charles is survived by his daughters, Kim Thompson Robinson of Durham, Michelle Thompson Ward of Cary; grandchildren, Tyler and Abbey Robinson, Emma, Carson, and Rachel Ward.
The family will receive friends Saturday, 4 to 6 p.m., at the home of his daughter, Kim Robinson, 3611 Medford Road, Durham.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the caregivers and companions that provided exceptional care: Anne Fluharty, Stacie Patel, and Theodore Roosevelt “Teddy’ Quick.
