Claiborne M. Carpenter
DURHAM — Mr. Claiborne M. Carpenter, 71, transitioned from this life to his eternal life with his Heavenly Father, Thursday, July 31, 2014 at his home. He was born in Wake County to the late Doc Carpenter and the late Odell Lloyd Carpenter. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Ronald and Earl Carpenter, and sister, Marie Davis. Mr. Carpenter operated Carpenter Electric Company.
Mr. Carpenter is survived by his wife, Sandra Carpenter; daughter, Melanie Perry and husband, Robbie; sisters, Doris Shealy of Pinehurst, Linda Wheeler of Durham; and a large extended family that included nieces and nephews that he was like a second father to.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Monday at Gorman Baptist Church with Dr. C.J. Bordeaux and Rev. Julian Motley officiating. Entombment will follow in Brier Creek Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for memorial contributions to be made to Gorman Baptist Church at 3315 East Geer St., Durham, NC 27704.

James C. Dodson, Jr.
DURHAM — James C. Dodson, Jr., age 87, died July 31, 2014 at Hock Family Pavilion. J.C. was born June 10, 1927 in Durham County to the late James Clyde Dodson, Sr. and Vonnie Blackman Dodson.
J.C. graduated Braggtown High School in 1945. After serving proudly in the U.S. Navy during WW II, J.C. graduated Kennedy Business College. He was of the Methodist faith and loved to read. J.C. retired as supervisor of export department after 40 years from the American Tobacco Company.
J.C. is survived by his wife of 65 years, Grace Stacy Dobson; his son, Michael Gary Dodson (Meghan) of New York; two brothers, Rhodes Dodson of Charlotte, Robert Dodson of Seven Devils, NC; one sister, Janet Knott of Oxford; one grandson, Walter Dodson; and several nieces and nephews.
The family thanks Dr. David Bright and Dr. Theodore Shaikewitz for their care and support.

Friends may visit from 4:00pm 6:00pm, Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
Graveside services will be held 12:00 noon Monday, August 4, 2014 at Maplewood Cemetery with the Rev. Ralph Harrell and Rev. Dr. Hugh McKinley.

Betty McCauley Driggs
DURHAM — Betty McCauley Driggs, 79, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014 at her home. She was born in Harnett County, daughter of the late Betty Rose Holsclaw. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Jim McCauley and Berk Driggs. Mrs. Driggs was employed by WalMart.
Mrs. Driggs is survived by her daughters, Susan J. McCauley, Shelia M. Johnson; grandchildren, Josh Baker and wife Jessica, Matthew Johnson and wife Tammy, Marc Johnson and wife Brittany; great-grandchildren, Karleigh Johnson, Brayden Johnson, and Wade Johnson; sisters, LaRee New, Brenda Pendergraft, Linda Medlin, Jane Rigsbee, Lenny Maynard; and brother, Kenny Holsclaw.

Richard Martin Sumrell

OXFORD — Richard Martin Sumrell, 68, of Oxford, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, July 31, 2014. He left his earthly life surrounded by his loving family.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be conducted at 3:30 pm on Sunday at Oxford Baptist Church by the Reverend Chris Aho. Inurnment will follow at the church columbarium. Family will receive friends and family from 2:00-3:30 pm in the Church Family Center.
Richard, a native of Greene County, was the son of the late Ola King and David Wilson Sumrell. He graduated from Greene Central High School in 1964. He was a proud member of the North Carolina State University class of 1968. Richard spent the majority of his career as a regional sales manager for Continental Grain Company. He retired as a sales manager for Wilson Milling Company in 2008. He retired as a major from the North Carolina Army National Guard in 1991 after serving honorably for 23 years.
Richard had a deep love of Oxford Baptist Church, where he was a member since 1972. He served as deacon, Sunday school class director, and as member of the church’s Columbarium and Building and Grounds committees. Reflecting his affinity of Granville County, Richard enjoyed giving his time to the Granville County Historical Society and the Oxford Garden Club.
In addition to spending time with his family, throughout his lifetime Richard enjoyed many hobbies and interests. He could be found collecting guns, coins and farm equipment, hunting, gardening, landscaping, traveling his regular walking routes and spending time on his farm. Richard was delighted to be able to pass along his love of God’s creation by teaching his children to garden, and his grandson to fish.
Surviving Richard are his wife of 46 years, Jessie Keen Sumrell, his son Jonathan Martin Sumrell (Susan) of Richmond, Virginia, and his daughter Beth Sumrell Ehrensberger (Ryan), also of Richmond. He is also survived by his brother, Don Sumrell of Leland, and sister, Jo Ann Faulkner of Winterville. Richard was very proud of his three grandchildren, Benedict Maynard Ehrensberger, Margaret Catherine Ehrensberger and Grace Martin Sumrell.

George Franklin Neville Sr.
CHAPEL HILL — Mr. George Franklin Neville Sr., age 89, passed on Tuesday, July 29, 2014.
He was born May 29, 1925 in Orange County.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 4, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the funeral at the church. He is survived by three sons, George Neville Jr. of Baltimore, Robert Neville and John Neville, both of Durham; one daughter, Patrica Neville of Durham.

William Thomas
BALTIMORE — Mr. William Thomas of Baltimore went home to be with the Lord on July 22, 2014. He and his wife, the late Josephine Woody Thomas, made Baltimore their home upon leaving North Carolina. He was owner and operator of Thomas Barber Shop.
He leaves behind a daughter, Rita Michelle Thomas; son, William David Thomas, II; six grandchildren; brothers, Garland Thomas (Geraldine), Edward Thomas (Faye), Andrew Thomas (Wilhemenia); sisters, Olivia Ford, Lucy Hamlett (Samuel), Louise Thomas; sisters-in-law, Jean Thomas, Martha Thomas; several nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends.
Family and friends will gather 3-6 pm, Sunday, August 3, at Estep Brothers Funeral Home, 1300 Eutaw Place, Baltimore. Visitation is 10-10:30 am, Monday, August 4, at Faith Baptist Church, 833 North Bond Street, Baltimore. Funeral service at 10:30 am, Rev. Dr. Greggory R. Maddox officiating, followed by interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, 2130 Woodlawn Drive, Baltimore.
