Murray Denis Brandt

DURHAM — Murray Denis Brandt, age 91, a resident of 4434 Ben Franklin Blvd. died Monday at Duke Regional Hospital.
Born in New York City, Mr. Brandt was the son of the late Nathan and Della Guterman Brandt. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. A Durham resident for 73 years, he graduated from Duke University in 1945 with a B.A. Degree in Business. He owned and operated The Fashion for many years, and was also employed with the Duke golf course. Mr. Brandt was a member of Beth-El Synagogue. His wife, Henrietta Sawilosky Brandt died January 4, 2014.
Surviving are his daughter, Nancy C. Brandt of Salisbury, his son, Donnie Brandt and wife Eva Miranda of Timberlake; his granddaughter, Natasha Blue and husband Chris of Chapel Hill, his grandson, Jeremy Brandt of Hillsborough his great-grandchildren, Carter and Lisa Blue and Luna and Miles Adams, and his brothers, Herbert Brandt of Florida, and Nathan Brandt of New York City, NY.
Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:00 PM in Durham Hebrew Cemetery, Rabbi Daniel Greyber officiating.

Clara "Mama Clara" Poole Perkins
DURHAM — Funeral services for Clara "Mama Clara" Poole Perkins will be held Friday, March 21, 2014 at 12 noon at West Durham Baptist Church, 1901 Athens St., Durham, NC. The family visitation will be held one hour prior to service, with the Daughter of Isis Zafa Court # 41 Rites beginning at 11:00am.
She departed this life on March 12, 2014.
Survivors include 4 grandchildren, Pamela S. Perkins, Natalie R. Perkins, Palmer L. Perkins III (Tracy) and Tony F. Perkins (Tresa); 11 great grandchildren; 9 great, great grandchildren; 2 great, great, great grandchildren; Betty Perkins Jones (Bernell) and a host of relatives and friends.

Edwin Lee "Ed" Sears
DURHAM — Mr. Edwin Lee Sears, 84, of Durham, died on Monday, March 17, 2014.
Mr. Sears was a native and lifelong resident of Durham, the son of the late Jesse Hubert Sears and Pearl Cartner Sears. He served in the U.S. Navy and retired after 38 years as an Engineer for GTE. He was a member of Lowes Grove Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and was a member of the Young Men’s Class and the Adult Choir. He was a member of the Durham Masonic Lodge 352, American Legion Post 416 and the Elks Lodge. He loved spending time at the beach.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean R. Sears; son, Randy Sears and wife, Amy of Durham; daughter, Iris S. Ellington and husband, Bill of Greensboro; brother, Norman T. Sears of New Bern; five grandchildren, Emily E. Guyer (Michael), Claire Sears, Will Ellington, Rob Sears and Christian Ellington; one great-granddaughter, Amelia Guyer.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Lowes Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Forest Gale and Rev. Michael Guyer will officiate. Burial with Masonic Rites will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lowes Grove Baptist Church Fund, 4430 S. Alston Ave. Durham, NC 27713. Online condolences may be made at

Helen Fay Horner Scott

HAW RIVER – Mrs. Helen Fay Horner Scott, 72, died Sunday, March 16, 2014.  She was a native of Orange County and attended the Orange County schools.  She was a very loving mother, grandmother, and sister.  She loved working and cooking.  She was the world’s greatest Nana.
Surviving are her daughter, Fay Scott McPherson, Haw River, her son, Mark Ronie Scott, Haw River, her sister, Dolly Maxine H. Alegria (Paul), Graham, two brothers, Timothy Horner (Mary), Bolivia, NC, and Johnnie T. Parker, Jr. (Candy), Mebane, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her parents, Hepsi T. and Mack Horner, her sister, Lois Darline Bowman.
Visitation will be 2-3 PM, Saturday, March 22, at Hillsborough Church of God.  The service will follow.
