ANDERSON
|
 |
HILLSBOROUGH - Larry Randall Anderson, 69, of Hillsborough passed away on Friday, November 9, 2007. Larry was born in High Point, the oldest child of Willis and Theo Anderson. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1961 and received his master's degree in social working.
Larry worked for the State of North Carolina as a clinical social worker immediately after graduation. People remember Larry most for his second and most fulfilling career as an artist. Along with his wife Sue, he created many beautiful pieces of ceramic art for more than 20 years with Anders Hill Pottery and later Heart Nouveau. Later in life, he returned to helping people as a clinical social worker in Orange County.
Larry loved working around his land and, particularly, working with plants and creating in his spectacular garden. Watching Carolina Basketball was his favorite spectator sport, trying out a new recipe kept him busy indoors and playing golf filled any spare moments. But his special time was saved for long walks around his land with his wife, Sue, and their dogs, Lilly and Juliette. Larry also savored his time in the summers, for the past 30 years, that he spent on Ocracoke Island with his family. Fishing and walking the shores were his enjoyment when there.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sue Gregory Anderson; son, Laurence Anderson and his wife, Thressa, of Jacksonville, Fla.; son, William Anderson and his wife, Tina, of Hillsborough; sister, June Anderson-Smith and husband, Norman, of Greensboro; aunt, Mrs. Jack E. Sappenfield of Greensboro; his five grandchildren, Eliska, Alana, Anthony, Bryant and Brendan; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, November 17, 2007, at the Hillsborough United Church of Christ, 200 Davis Road, Hillsborough, NC, 27278 (ph: 919-732-9183). The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations, in memory of Larry R. Anderson, to the Hillsborough United Church of Christ at the above address.

BONNELL
|
 |
CHAPEL HILL - William Shannon Bonnell, age 90, a resident of Carolina Meadows Retirement Center since 1993, died on November 12, 2007, of heart failure. He was the only son of Mae Lloyd and Everett Shannon Bonnell and was born on December 23, 1916, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at Gwinn. He loved the outdoor life of the Upper Peninsula and was active in Boy Scouting and became an Eagle Scout.
During his early teens, Bill helped support his family through the Depression by selling real silk on street corners, offering buyers a room to stay with his family as a boarder. His sister, Elizabeth, an artist, gave up the opportunity to study abroad so Bill could go to college and then faithfully sent some of her earnings as an art teacher to him every month until he graduated.
Following a year at Northern State Teachers College in Marquette, Michigan, and a year at George Washington University, Bill graduated with honors in February 1939 from the University of Illinois with a degree in chemical engineering.
In December 1939 he married Betty Mae Dippell of Memphis, Tennessee. They were married for over 62 years. He is survived by three daughters, Judith and her husband, Mark Wenzel, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mary and her husband, Bob Chase, of Durham and Ruth and her husband, Tom Roden, of Baytown, Texas, and one son, Ralph Bonnell and his wife, Jan, of Austin, Texas. Nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive him. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2002 and by his sister, Elizabeth Petersen, in 2003.
Bill went to work for Gulf Oil Corporation in February 1939 and retired on December 31, 1981, after 42 years. His first four years were with Gulf Research and Development in pilot plant operations. The last two years were also with Gulf Research and Development as a consultant. The years in between included refinery and petrochemical operations for Gulf Oil Corporation and, later, project management and troubleshooting. More than 12 years were in Japan, Holland and Taiwan.
The most satisfying projects were the contracting, construction and manning of Gulf's first grass roots petrochemical plant at Baytown, Texas, and the commercialization of Gulf's hydrodesulfurization (HDS) process in Japan. The process removed most of the sulfur from Kuwait residual crude oil used as fuel to produce electricity. The several HDS units were built in cooperation with Japanese refiners and contractors reducing air pollution.
In the late 1960s, he was project manager of the first fertilizer plant built in Chinhae, South Korea. It was a joint project involving Gulf Oil Corporation, AID (Agency for International Development) and the South Korean government. This plant was a significant factor in reducing AID's purchase of fertilizer for South Korea and in increasing South Korea's rice production.
Bill loved to sing and sang in glee clubs while in college and, later, in church choirs. At Carolina Meadows he was a member of the barbershop quartet group and the MeadowSingers.
He was a generous, compassionate person who faithfully cared for and mentored others and always wanted the best for his family.
He and his entire family deeply appreciate the care he and his wife were given by all the staff at Carolina Meadows.
For many years he has been enrolled in the Joseph and Kathleen Bryan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at Duke University Medical Center as part of a normal aging control group.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 15, at Triangle Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the church at 5001 Tudor Place, Durham, NC 27713 or to Lee College for the Bonnell Scholarship. Please make checks payable to the Bonnell Scholarship Fund and mail to Lee College, P.O. Box 818, Baytown, TX 77522-0818, Attn: Mrs. Roberta Wright.

EATON

CHAPEL HILL - Isabel Patterson "Pat" Eaton died on Sunday, November 11, 2007, at her home in Chapel Hill. For those who knew her, Pat was a most engaging woman-even when her words were sharp and her stage whispers reached the balcony. Pat had a deep vein of tenderness that could be overshadowed by her sometimes cranky, complaining manner. But, when her shy smile emerged and her voice softened, Pat warmed one's heart with her appreciation for the care and attention shown her.
Pat loved, especially, mashed potatoes, a well-prepared salmon filet, wonderful literature and art of the modern era. With pleasure and satisfaction she had tended, when able, a lush garden of roses, azaleas and dogwoods. Gathering with friends who shared her interests and were amused by her repartee was, for Pat, the essence of refined social engagement.
Together in marriage from the 1940s until 2005, Pat supported her late husband, Charles Edward Eaton, in his pursuits as poet, writer and teacher. From the first she managed his manuscripts and correspondence, edited his work, handled publication details and, finally, oversaw the depositing of his papers in the Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina. For many years they lived an orderly life of winters in Chapel Hill and summers in Woodstock, Connecticut. Frequently, they went to Cape Cod to visit with artist friends-especially Karl Knaths whose work they collected extensively.
Mr. and Mrs. Eaton always had a dog and sometimes a cat or two. Pat, a storyteller of wit and catchy phrasing, recounted the adventures of traveling with their animals. One of her favorite stories was about the leaving of "Willie" behind-most accidentally-at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. In those days the Shoreham was closely affiliated with American Airlines. From her first call to inquire about the missing cat until he was delivered several days later, Pat told of hotel and airline personnel solicitously tending to Willie's diet and other needs. When he finally arrived home, on Christmas Eve, Willie was nicely fitted into an AA carrying case-topped with a huge, red satin bow.
Pat died on Armistice Day-another throwback to the memories of her youth. He father, who had wished to be a part of WWI, never made it to Europe before the conflict was over. However, for a decade or so after hostilities had ceased, he and friends maintained an army-style bivouac in the woods up river from Pittsburgh, where Pat grew up. He took Pat and her brother and sister there to learn about managing out-of-doors. Apparently, their mother was not too keen on this venture. She and the family butler would descend on the primitive setting with well-filled picnic baskets to save the campers from trench rations.
Isabel never left anyone in doubt about her preferences and things that mattered to her. Even those who first met Pat in her later life were influenced by the force of her personality, which was packaged in a diminutive lady. Her magnetism prevailed and folks attempted to please her, sometimes with amazing success, while on other occasions nothing could reach the lonely place of disappointment that Pat shared with all others who cross the earth.
Mrs. Eaton leaves behind nieces and nephews, by blood and by marriage, and their progeny of two more generations. She had family and friends who visited regularly and were at Pat's side even in her final hours. Since 2004 a team of aides has responsibly seen to Mrs. Eaton's care. House and grounds have been looked after by folks loyal to her. UNC Hospice, in the last months of Mrs. Eaton's life, provided special support.
For those who would like to remember Isabel Eaton the family suggests donations to UNC Hospice, P.O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312 or the Ackland Art Museum, where the Eaton art collection has been donated, Ackland, UNC, CB# 3400, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3400 or the Wilson Library, repository of Mr. Eaton's papers, which Pat carefully catalogued for scholarly use, Wilson, UNC, CB# 3930, Chapel Hill, NC 27514-8890.
Burial will be at Old Chapel Hill Cemetery. A graveside service will be held there on Monday, November 19, 2007, at 2 p.m.

RAVELLETTE
|
 |
CARRBORO - Mr. Marty Ravellette of Carrboro passed away early Monday November 12, 2007, at UNC Hospital. He was 67.
The son of the late Ernest D. Ravellette and Laurene Frohreich, Mr. Ravellette was preceded in death by his son, Marcus Ravellette.
Mr. Ravellette is survived by his wife, Maree Ravellette; a daughter, Nancy Jo Neilsen of Florida; three grandchildren, Marcus Neilsen, Aaron Neilsen and Ayanna Wade; brother, Robert Ravellette; and sisters, Edith Stellmaker and Barbara Furry.
Born in Goodland, Indiana, Mr. Ravellette lived in eight states before moving to Chapel Hill in 1991 and starting his own landscaping business. Born with no arms and trained to use his feet by nurses at the Good Shepherd Home, Marty became well-known and admired for his passion for life and commitment to the community, never letting his disability slow him down. He drove his van, drank coffee and ate meals with his feet. Friends would see Marty mowing lawns, raking leaves, planting flowers and even chopping down trees with a chain saw.
In 1998 Marty gained instant fame when he and his wife, Maree, saved a woman from a burning car on Route 15-501. Marty bust through a window with his feet and Maree pulled the woman from the car. Ravellette appeared on national television and became a local celebrity. In 2004 filmmaker Bill Hayes made a documentary about him called "No Arms Needed: A Hero Among Us," which aired on the Discovery Channel.
Marty never shied away from talking about his disability; he used it as a way to bring awareness to the idea that we're all different, but we're all human. Inspired by his beliefs as a member of the Baha'i Faith, which he joined in 1967, Marty often gave motivational talks to UNC students on equality, justice and the unity of mankind. He would often quote one of his favorite lines from the Baha'i Sacred Writings, "Noble have I created thee; why hast thou abased thyself."
The Baha'is of the Triangle are saddened for Marty's dear wife, Maree, and his family. A memorial service is being scheduled for Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. at University Presbyterian Church at 209 E Franklin St., Chapel Hill.
