DURHAM - Funeral Services for Mr. Joshua "JB" Ballard, 69, of 2 Flatford Ct. will be conducted on Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Antioch Baptist Church and interment will follow in the Glennview Memorial Park. Survivors are two sons, Antonio L. Brooks and Joseph Jordan, Jr.; nine daughters, Shirley D. Jordan, Patricia A. Jordan, Franicna Mills, Pamela J. Ruebin, Elizabeth A. ROXBORO - Gracie Walker Cole, age 89, of 926 Thaxton Road died Thursday, April 10, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital. She was born in Person County and was the daughter of the late Charlie and Della Cox Walker. She was widow of the late James W. Cole. She was preceded in death by her brothers; Ivan, Melvin, Irvin, James Merritt Walker and sisters; Betty Blue Walker, Alice Gillis, and Ruby O'Briant. She was a member of Cavel United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her children and spouses; James Cole and wife, Carolyn, of Semora; Norman Cole and wife Liz, Ann Whitlow and husband Jimmy, Delores Hicks and husband Bobby, W. Pete Cole and wife, Diane, Larry Cole and wife, Kathy, Tony Cole and wife, Phyllis, and Mark Cole, all of Roxboro.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Funeral services will be held 3PM Sunday, at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Ross Thompson and Pastor Randy Stoner. Burial will follow in the Person Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Todd Whitlow, Jamie Whitlow, Lynn Whitlow, Jeffery Whitlow, Chris Hicks, Craig Hicks, Brian Cole, Adam Cole, and Kevin Cole. Honorary pallbearers will be Edward Cole and Kirk Whitlow.

DURHAM - Mrs. Mollie Oldham Dickerson, 83, of 1200 N. Duke St., died Thursday morning at Durham Regional Hospital. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Burlington Industries. Mrs. Dickerson was a member of Trinity Community Church of the Christian Missionary Alliance.
Mrs. Dickerson is survived by a daughter, Cindy Dickerson Beard; sons, Roger Dickerson, Bobby Dickerson and Tony Dickerson.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 11 a.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

DURHAM - Mrs. Margie Lee Hamacher, 84, of Durham, died on Thursday, April 10, 2008.
Mrs. Hamacher was born in Ware Shoals, SC to the late Benjamin Perry Bagwell and Minnie Lee Brooks Bagwell. She had lived in Durham most of her life and was currently living with family in Mebane. Mrs. Hamacher retired after 40 years with Burlington Industries. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Hamacher. She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by all.
She is survived by two sons, Tommy Hamacher and wife, Wanda, of Roxboro and Henry Hamacher, of N. Charleston, SC; three daughters, Gloria Teasley and husband, Mack, of Cary, Frieda Gentry and husband, Craig, of Roxboro and Sherry Tart and husband, Bill Tuck, of Virgilina, Va.; grandchildren, Richard Taylor, Michael Taylor, David Taylor, C. J. Dunn, Henry Hamacher, Jr., Randall Hamacher, Albert Hamacher, Nelson Ragan, Jr., Stephen Gentry, Lynn Penny, Terry Lewis, Mack Teasley, Jr. and fifteen great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens with Dr.Marc Francis officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. Flowers are acceptable.

Mrs. Holloway is survived by her son, Ronald C. Holloway; daughter, Merita Cheek; son, Robert R. Holloway; twin daughters, Alice H. Parker and Lillie Philpot. Mrs. Holloway is also survived by a sister, Margie G. Whitfield and sister in law, Eunice W. Griffin.

DURHAM - Mr. Odell Winford Jackson, 88, of 721 Crestview Drive, died on Tuesday, April 8, 2008.
He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Jackson owned and operated Jackson Roofing Company. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his son, Tim Jackson; two daughters, Brenda J. Johnson and Robin J. McBroom.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. Flowers are acceptable.

KENNEDY

WARRENTON - John P. Kennedy, Jr., 85, formerly of Hillsborough and Charlotte, died April 9, 2008 at Shady Oaks Plantation in Warrenton. Kennedy was a key figure in fashioning the legislation that created North Carolina's present system for the governance of higher education. Kennedy then because the first Secretary of the expanded University, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1987.
After service in the Army and earning degrees from Harvard University, Cambridge University in England and UNC-Chapel Hill, Kennedy practiced law in Charlotte and served as vice-president of the First Union National Bank (now Wachovia). He represented Mecklenburg County in the General Assembly from 1959-62, where he was a prominent progressive, working to extend the minimum wage and on occasion casting the sole vote against segregationist legislation. He challenged incumbent Congressman, Paul Kitchen in the 1962 Democratic primary, losing by one and a half votes per precinct. He then became a State Department official, serving in the Embassy in Nigeria during the Biafran War.
For 23 years the Kennedys lived in Hillsborough where Kennedy and his wife, with two friends, founded the Preservation Fund of Hillsborough. In 1995 they moved to Shady Oaks, an 1812 plantation house in Warren County listed on the National Register. The Kennedys have received numerous local and state-wide awards for their preservations efforts, including Preservation North Carolina's Gertrude Carraway Award.
Kennedy served on many local and statewide boards. He headed the Roanoke Island Historical Association, the organization that produces "The Lost Colony" and also served as president of the Cherry Hill Historical Foundation. An active Episcopalian, Kennedy was senior warden of St. Matthew's Church in Hillsborough and a vestryman of Emmanuel Church in Warrenton.
Kennedy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Kennedy; by two sons, Lionel of Maryland and Christopher of Alaska; by five grandchildren, Kendra and Esther of Alaska, Lucy Boyce, a student at Duke University, and Amelia and Garland of Maryland and by his sister, Jane Sutton Branson of Charlotte. The Kennedys had a third child, who died in 1962.
I lieu of flowers, memorials in his memory may be directed to Preservation Hillsborough, Cherry Hill Foundation, or Winghaven Gardens in Charlotte.
An interment service will be held at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 210 St. Mary's Road, Hillsborough on Saturday, April 12 at 10 a.m. A memorial service will be held Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Warrenton, on Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m.
Arrangements are by the Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.

REYNOLDSBURG, OHIO - Mr. Johnny C. Paylor, 53, died Saturday, April 5, 2008 in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. He was the son of the late Charlie Floyd and Dora Talley Paylor. He joined the Hyco Zion Baptist Church, was a 1973 graduate of Person Senior High School and he retired from the United States Navy in 2003 after serving twenty three years.
He is survived by two children, Sting Paylor and Octavia Paylor both of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; seven sisters, Glossie Paylor and Pearl Carver of Baltimore, Md., Joanne Lee of Coatesville, Pa., Pansy Fowler of Southfield, Mich., Dorothy Tomasovich of Chester Springs, Pa., May Paylor of Wilmington, Del. And Stella P. Nelson of Roxboro, N.C.; two brothers, Jewel Paylor of Baltimore, Md. and Walter Paylor of Detroit, Mich. and one uncle Sam Paylor of Roxboro, N.C.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. in Mill Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Frederick Wilson officiating and the Rev. Ben Clay will do the eulogy. HILLSBOROUGH - Sue Gray Ramos, 70, died Thursday, April 10, 2008 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Born in Mullins, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Donnan Evans and Kathryn Judd Gray. She attended Durham High School and graduated from Stratford Hall in Danville, Va. Sue enjoyed politics and was an avid Republican. She was also a lover of animals and a supporter of the ASPCA.
Surviving are her twin brother, Bill Gray of Lyons, Colo. and his children, Donnan Evans Gray and Christopher O'Donnel Gray; her sister, Mary Elizabeth "Lib" Gray Dula of Charlotte, N.C. and her children, Page Dula, Alson Dula Brodhage and Allen B. Dula; and her sister, Judd Gray Oyler and her husband David of Marietta, Ga., and their children, David S. Oyler, Kathyrn O. Denson and Donnan Oyler.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston, Virginia, with the Rev. Haywood Holderness officiating.

- Annie Lee Teasley of 1001 Norwood Avenue answered the call of the Lord on Monday afternoon April 7, 2008 after a short stay at Duke Hospice of the Meadowlands in Hillsborough.
She leaves to mourn on brother, Elijah Allen and one sister, Lizzie Downer, both of Elberton, Georgia and seven children: Frances (Paul) Mims, James and Ben (Mary) Teasley of Durham, Mary Teasley of Raleigh, Sarah Vinson, Barbara Eley and William (Elizabeth) Teasley of New Jersey.
Annie was a Home Health Care Adie for many years and was well-respected throughout Durham for her compassionate Care.

DURHAM - Mrs. Henrietta P. Van Vorst, 86, died Monday morning at Forestview Rehabilitation. Mrs. Van Vorst was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Tannersville, Pa. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Becton Dickinson Labs.
Mrs. Van Vorst is survived by her daughter, Linda Van Vorst Griffiths; son, Garrett Wayne Van Vorst; sisters, Madeline Feist, Mary Littlefield and Josephine Bleakly.
