Filing period opens today
The filing period opens today at noon for candidates vying for a seat on the school board in the May 6 election.
Candidates running for congressional seats, state Senate and House seats, county sheriff, district attorney and numerous judicial seats can also begin filing for election today at the Durham County Board of Elections office, which is at 706 W. Corporation St.
The filing period will close at noon Feb. 28.
May 6 will be primary elections in all races except the school board. Candidates for school board will be outright elected May 6 since it is a nonpartisan race.
The school board will get at least two new members because incumbents Frederick Davis and Nancy Cox, who represent Districts 1 and 2 respectively, have announced that they will not seek re-election.
Incumbents Omega Curtis Parker who represents District 1 and Natalie Beyer, who represents District 2, both have said they will seek re-election.
At least one person already aims to replace Cox.
Matt Sears, director for school services at North Carolina New Schools and a former Durham educator, said he will seek the District 3 seat.
The school board election comes as the board is launching a search process for a new superintendent.
Former Superintendent Eric Becoats resigned in December after a tumultuous year marked by several high profile missteps.
The district is weighing proposals from search firms that want to conduct the search for the next superintendent.
The board hasn’t decided whether the current board or the new one will hire the next superintendent.
