Kara Cannizzaro scored four straight second-half goals and Abbey Friend scored three times as No. 3 seed North Carolina crushed No. 2 seed Northwestern 11-4 Friday to advance to Sunday night’s women’s lacrosse NCAA Championship game.
The semifinal game was played at Villanova University in suburban Philadelphia and ended Northwestern’s two-year reign as NCAA champions.
The victory sends the Tar Heels (17-3) to their second appearance in the national championship game, which will be held at Villanova.
Also Friday, the Duke women’s golf team played its best tournament ever, setting a school record for a 72-hole tournament with a team total of 2-over par, but didn’t come close to catching national champion Southern Cal.
The Trojans, who set an NCAA Championship 18-hole team mark of 12-under Wednesday, finished a remarkable 21 strokes ahead of Duke, capping out at 19-under.
Duke actually finished 19 strokes ahead of third-place Perdue.
In the individual championship, Duke senior Lindy Duncan also finished second.
