Woods fire burns 40 acres
A woods fire burned about 40 acres Monday near a residential area in western Durham, but no houses were damaged and no one was hurt, Durham fire officials said.
Battalion Chief Derrick Bolar of the Durham Fire Department said the fire broke out Monday afternoon near Berini Drive close to Shoccere Drive, off Cole Mill Road.
Bolar said the flames burned mostly brush.
Firefighters used shovels and rakes in addition to water to bring the blaze under control. Twenty-one firefighters were at the scene about two hours, and cleared the area about 5:30 p.m.
Assisting were firefighters from Lebanon, Bahama and Eno volunteer fire departments. The N.C. Forest Service brought a tractor to dig a trench to contain the flames, he said.
Bolar said the fire’s cause is being investigated.
