Parking deck construction to cause traffic delays
The construction of a parking deck at 300 East Main Street in Carrboro could create traffic delays on Carrboro and Chapel Hill’s busiest downtown streets for about six weeks beginning Friday.
The delays will occur about every 45 minutes, and will be for the length of time it will take for an oversized truck carrying large pre-cast concrete double T-shaped forms to back from East Main Street onto Boyd Street next to Domino’s Pizza.
That block curves off the end of West Franklin Street heading into Carrboro.
“They’re not closing the road all day,” said Laura Van Sant of Main Street Properties, which is building the hotel and parking deck at the site. “It will be for a few minutes at a time.”
Deliveries are expected from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, and signs will alert drivers when flaggers are stopping traffic. Drivers and pedestrians can detour around the area via Merritt Mill Road and West Rosemary Street.
Businesses in the area will remain open during construction.
Flagmen will stop traffic both ways, and it could temporarily delay traffic on West Franklin Street and East Main Street.
The 500-car parking deck will be behind a new Hampton Inn & Suites that Main Street Properties is building. The outside brick work on the hotel and retail space is nearly complete and work is progressing inside the building, Van Sant said.
“Everything is going to be open in June,” she said of the hotel and parking deck.
The ground floor of the hotel will include restaurant and retail space, and so far about 70 percent of that space has been leased, she said. Main Street Properties expects to announce who will be leasing the space in about two weeks, Van Sant said.
