Man found shot to death in car
Police said a man was found shot to death inside a car Thursday night at Duke Manor Apartments on South LaSalle Street in West Durham.
He was identified as JeJuan Jonteil Taylor Jr., 19, of Cleveland Street in Durham.
The shooting happened about 9:10 p.m. near Building 44, Durham police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.
When officers arrived, they found the victim had been shot inside the car, which crashed into a wooden fence. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the slaying did not appear to be a random crime, but police offered no motive for the shooting.
No arrest had been made Friday.
Rhoda Smith, who lives at Duke Manor, said she heard three shots as she and her son watched television Thursday night.
“Oh, I heard the shots,” she said. “You couldn’t miss that. Everybody was so stunned by it. Some of the neighbors came out and looked, but that’s all we could do.”
“And there’s a great big hole over there,” she said, referring to the fence that the car plowed into.
Smith, who said she’s lived at Duke Manor for more than a year, described the area as normally quiet.
“Crime is usually pretty good [low] around here,” she said. “This was an unusual case. As I told my neighbor: Summer hasn’t even gotten here!”
