A man on Park Avenue wouldn’t drop the knife he was wielding Saturday morning, so police shot him, according to investigators.

The incident happened at about 8:41 a.m. in the 800 block of Park, near the intersection of Lathrop Street.

Durham police officers were called about a stabbing in the 700 block. They arrived to find a man who bled heavily from a cut on the face.

Officers next approached and confronted the suspect, who refused to drop his weapon, investigators said.

He was shot. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. His name, age and potential motive for attacking the other man weren’t released as of Saturday evening. Police also didn’t indicate how many officers fired at the suspect.

The stabbing victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The shooting is under review by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and the Durham Police Department’s Professional Standards Division and Criminal Investigations Division. That’s standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting, the department reported.
