One person was killed and four others injured when a pickup truck and a car collided head-on near Northern High School on Wednesday afternoon.
The wreck, just north of the intersection of North Roxboro Road and Macwood Drive, was reported at 2:18 p.m. Police closed North Roxboro Road and re-routed traffic around the accident, and motorists were asked to find alternate routes.
The road stayed closed for several hours as paramedics, ambulances, firefighters and police officers tended to the victims and investigated the cause of the accident.
It appeared a dark silver car and a black Ford F350 pickup truck collided with each other car on the four-lane road. Both vehicles had severe front-end damage.
“One car, the whole front end was completely smashed,” said Susan Broili, who lives near the accident scene.
Broili, who is a freelancer writer for The Herald-Sun, said she wasn’t sure how the wreck occurred but said it is difficult for drivers to see oncoming traffic when they are trying to turn from Macwood Drive onto Roxboro Road.
Police put up crime scene tape north and south of the accident and were re-routing local traffic onto Milton Road, she said.
Police had not released the names or ages of any of the victims Wednesday evening.
