DPS to host literacy summit Saturday
The school district is expecting more than 200 volunteers, tutors and community groups to gather Saturday at Brogden Middle School for its first literacy summit.
The event, sponsored by the Superintendent’s Closing the Achievement Gap Task Force, will be held at Brogden, 1001 Leon St., from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Those attending the summit will learn strategies to help boost elementary students’ reading and writing skills while aligning community efforts to meet state reading standards.
Trained volunteers will be asked to commit to supporting DPS students during the summer reading camps and those camps that will be offered throughout next school year due to the state’s Read to Achieve legislation.
The public can pre-register at http://dpsnc.net/programs-services/academics/literacy-summit or may register when they arrive.
Child care is offered to guests who pre-registered. Breakfast and lunch are provided.
