Police log, March 13
A 35-year-old Mebane man committed five robberies in two days in Durham last week before he was caught, police said.
Derrick Lamont Shuler was charged in connection with incidents in which he’s accused of stealing cars and robbing women and convenience store clerks.
Durham police investigators gave this account:
On March 4, a woman sat in her car in the parking lot of 5386 New Hope Commons Drive. A man approached and asked for $3, then pulled a gun and demanded more money. He took her purse, but dropped it after a witness came to help her. He grabbed a purse from another woman, but dropped it when another witness pursued him.
About an hour later, a woman using the ATM at the PNC Bank on Westgate Drive faced a man with a gun in his jacket. He demanded money and the keys to her Dodge Avenger. Her car was found wrecked a short time later on Buchanan Boulevard near Maxwell Avenue.
On March 5, a woman got out of her car at the BP convenience store at 1002 North Alston Avenue. A man with a gun entered the store, snatched a purse from a 9-year-old girl and demanded the keys to the woman’s Dodge SUV. He pointed the gun at two children in the car and ordered them out.
An hour later, at another BP convenience store at 1922 West Main Street, a man walked in and pointed a gun at the clerk and grabbed cash from the register. He fled in the previously stolen SUV, which was later found abandoned on Anderson Street near Duke Gardens.
About 8:30 a.m., the man took a cab to the Dollar General at 2000 Chapel Hill Road and robbed an employee at gunpoint. He was dropped off in the West End neighborhood, where he was picked up by a second cab. He rode to the 1300 block of North Alston Avenue, where he was arrested after a brief foot chase on railroad tracks.
He was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of stolen goods, larceny, assault by pointing a gun, communicating threats and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was held without bond in the Durham County Jail.
In other news:
- Brent McGill, 28, of Darrow Road in Durham was arrested Tuesday for extradition as a fugitive from another state. He was cited for marijuana possession after he was stopped on North Miami Boulevard. Then officers checked and learned that authorities in New Orleans sought him for a charge of aggravated assault with a gun. He was held in the Durham County Jail under $1 million bond.
- Calib Shaun Thomas, 25, of Greyson Drive in Durham was arrested Tuesday and charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon and failure to store a firearm to protect a minor. He was charged in connection with a February incident of shots fired in a home. No one was hurt, but the gun – which had been reported stolen during a 2013 burglary on Virgie Street – was fired by a child in the home.
