Police Department getting 16 new officers

The Durham Police Department will hold graduation ceremonies for the BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training) Academy 36 at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, 504 W. Chapel Hill St.

The class is composed of 16 Durham police officers, including 14 men and two women ranging in age from 20 to 32 years old. Nine have four-year college degrees and one has military experience. 

One of the new officers is from Durham and nine more are from other places in North Carolina. Two recruits are related to current or former Durham police officers.

The graduates are Andrew B. Beck, Ryan M. Benfield, Justin G. Christy, Matthew L. Davis, Samuel A. Duncan, Dustin L. Harris, Jenny L. Hollingsworth, Jacob N. Horton, Kevin W. Johnson Jr., Thomas M. Lairmore, Kaz I. Offenburg, Obed E. Ortiz, Andrew P. Reuther, Mickie L. Rich, Brandon M. Scotti and Charles T. Strickland.

After graduation, the new recruits will be assigned to a police training officer for about six months.
