Durham police on Friday arrested the second suspect in connection with a robbery and chase in the county sheriff’s jurisdiction that involved a car stolen from within the city limits.

Christian Kevin Colato, 19, of Liberty Street in Durham was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The first suspect, 18-year-old Jose Luis Perez-Alejandre, was captured by deputies on Wednesday night after they say he wrecked a stolen Toyota Corolla. He faces additional charges filed by the Durham Police Department, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.

Police allege that the pair carjacked the Corolla from a man in the 1800 block of Chapel Hill Road about 8:48 p.m. Wednesday. They’re accused of then driving the car to a Latino grocery on Wake Forest Highway so they could rob it, before leading authorities on a brief car chase. The passenger, believed to be Colato, eluded deputies that night.

It wasn’t the first trouble stirred up by Colato and Perez-Alejandre this month, according to investigators.

On Jan. 6, police say, the men opened fire on a house in the 400 block of Green Street from a vehicle. Three days later, a woman in the same area said that she was shot in the hand and pelvis by suspects in a vehicle. She was treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Colato was in the Durham County Jail under $320,000 bond. Perez-Alejandre’s bond rose to just over $1 million after the new charges were filed.
