Men in Durham shooting knew each other
Police on Tuesday charged a 36-year-old Durham man and accused him of gunning down another man near the Lincoln Community Health Center.
Investigators allege that Richard Lee Johnson fatally shot Anthony M. Dixon, 33, also of Durham.
The incident happened about 9:49 a.m. in the 600 block of Linwood Avenue.
Dixon was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Officers took Johnson into custody soon after the shooting.
Initially, police announced that they sought two other men who were seen running toward Fayetteville Street. By Tuesday evening, however, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said “further investigation indicates they did not participate in the murder.”
Johnson and Dixon knew each other, Michael said, “and the incident did not appear to be random.”
It remains unclear what motivated the shooting.
Johnson’s criminal record includes a conviction for robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was held without bond in the Durham County Jail on Tuesday, charged with murder.
This marks the second homicide for Durham in 2014. The first was the death of a 9-year-old boy shot along with his mother in an SUV more than a week ago.
