Fire damages Durham motel
Fire damaged a West Durham motel Wednesday night and destroyed 25 mattresses, Durham fire officials said. No one was hurt.
Deputy Chief Chris Iannuzzi of the Durham Fire Department said firefighters were called at 10:04 p.m. to Days Inn at 3460 Hillsborough Road and saw “very heavy smoke” at the entrance.
When firefighters got to the rear of the motel, they saw heavy fire on the first floor in a breezeway between the rear of the building and a courtyard. The fire extended up to the second-floor breezeway and roof on both sides of the building, Iannuzzi said.
The fire was under control in 37 minutes and confined to the outside of the building, he said.
About 25 mattresses that were being replaced were destroyed.
Displaced guests were relocated to another motel in the area, Iannuzzi said.
Crews were on the scene for almost three hours.
The cause of the fire was being investigated Thursday.
