Hunting for football joy
North Carolina got the football weekend started early on Thursday night but it’s up to Duke and N.C. Central to bring some happiness to the occasion.
The Tar Heels played well for three quarters, building a 10-point lead, but No. 10 Miami rallied for a 27-23 ACC win at Kenan Stadium Thursday night.
The loss was the fourth in a row for the Tar Heels (1-5, 0-3 in ACC).
Now Duke and NCCU give it a try.
The Blue Devils (4-2, 0-2) look for their first ACC win on a trip to Charlottesville, Va., to play Virginia Saturday (3:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net South).
Duke swept its non-conference foes, topping Navy 35-7 last week, and needs two wins over its final six games to qualify for a bowl game for the second season in a row. The Blue Devils have defeated Virginia (2-4, 0-2) in four of their last five meetings.
NCCU celebrates homecoming against Morgan State Saturday (2 p.m., nccueaglepride.com). The Eagles (1-5, 1-1 in MEAC) look to bounce back from an ugly 44-3 home loss to S.C. State on Oct. 10.
Morgan State (1-5, 1-1) with a record identical to the Eagles, is also struggling this season.
N.C. State (3-3, 0-3 in ACC), which has lost two games in a row, takes Saturday off before returning to play on Oct. 26 against Florida State.
