Police charge man with attempted murder in Geer St. shooting
Police have charged a man with attempted murder in a shooting earlier this month that left a man wounded.
Dwight Allan Judd Jr., 23, of Durham was charged this week in a shooting on Geer Street near Avondale Drive.
Police were called at 5:54 p.m. Aug. 1 to the 1200 block of Spruce Street and found a man wounded by gunfire. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. It was later determined that the shooting happened on Geer Street and the victim drove to Spruce Street for help, according to police.
A description of a possible suspect vehicle was broadcast. Police located the car and tried to stop it, but the driver refused to stop, and officers began a pursuit. The chase ended on Evans Street, a dead-end road off Cornwallis Road.
Three occupants were taken into custody, but investigators later determined they were not involved in the shooting.
Investigators said the vehicle's driver, Stephen Lamont Steele Jr., 25, of Mathison Street, was wanted on numerous outstanding felony warrants. Police filed additional charges against Steele in the chase, including felony hit-and-run.
Police reported the arrest of Judd on Friday. In addition to the attempted first-degree murder charge, Judd is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a weapon into occupied property and felony conspiracy in connection with the Geer Street shooting. He also was charged with two probation violations.
Judd remains in the Durham County Jail under a $2.5 million bond.
