Driver dies in crash on Interstate 40
A man was pronounced dead Wednesday after the vehicle he was driving crossed several lanes on Interstate 40 in Durham and ended up next to a concrete barrier, authorities said.
Police said it appeared that the accident may have been caused by a medical condition.
The man's identity had not been released as of Wednesday evening.
Durham police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said the accident happened at 1:19 p.m. on I-40 East near Fayetteville Road, and involved one vehicle.
Michael said the vehicle crossed from the right lane to the far left lane and ended up next to a jersey barrier. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Traffic on I-40 East was reduced to one lane near Fayetteville Road.
A second, unrelated accident was reported at 1:51 p.m. on the Fayetteville Road bridge over I-40. It involved at least two vehicles, Michael said. One person was hurt, but the injury did not appear to be serious, she said.
