Driver killed in wrong-way crash identified
DURHAM – Police on Wednesday identified John Michael Williams, 59, of Durham as the driver of a car that drove south in the northbound lanes of the Durham Freeway and struck an oncoming Jeep.
Williams died in the accident, which happened about 8:58 p.m. Tuesday near Exit 16 (U.S. 15/501).
The driver and two passengers in the Jeep suffered injuries. Jimmy Allen, 25, of Hillsborough and his brother, Walter, 30, were seriously injured. They remained hospitalized on Wednesday. Michael Carter, 28, of Durham was a back-seat passenger. He was treated and released.
“Investigators are still trying to determine where Williams’ vehicle entered the highway in the wrong lanes,” said Kammie Michael, police spokeswoman.
DURHAM – Three men and a 15-year-old boy face charges in connection with incidents in the vicinity of Morreene Road, Glasson Street and South Lasalle Street.
Brandon Rich and Kevin Morgan, accused earlier this year of burglarizing homes in Duke Park, now face new charges along with Quadarius Evans and the unidentified teen.
Warrants taken out this week involve the following incidents:
-- On Nov. 4, 2013, someone kicked in the door of a home on Glasson Street and stole a PlayStation gaming console. Rich was charged.
-- On Nov. 14, a man was in the laundry room of an apartment complex on Morreene Road when he was hit from behind and knocked to the floor. The suspects took his wallet, keys and phone. Rich, Morgan, Evans and the juvenile were charged.
-- On Dec. 14, a resident in an apartment on Morreene Road reported that several people tried to kick in the door. Morgan, Rich and Evans were charged.
-- On Dec. 15, another apartment dweller on Morreene Road reported that someone tried to kick in their door. Morgan and Evans were charged.
-- On Dec. 16, suspects broke into a vacant apartment on Morreene Road. Evans and Rich were charged.
-- On Jan. 8, a man was taking out the trash on South LaSalle Street when two men approached, held a gun to his head and kicked him in the stomach before fleeing with his cash. Evans and Morgan were charged.
Evans and Morgan also were among the suspects charged in connection with the robbery of a Domino’s driver in January.
Evans was held in the Durham County Jail under $750,000 bond. Rich was held under $100,000 bond. Morgan was released on the new charges after posting $2,500 bond.
