Road projects starting in Carrboro and northern Orange
Work on the long-awaited widening of a section of Smith Level Road in Carrboro is scheduled to begin Monday.
Crews are scheduled to begin utility work to prepare for the upcoming widening project, which will run from the bridge near the Bypass to Rock Haven Road.
Motorists can expect intermittent lane closures after 9 a.m. each day and are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid delays.
The narrow section of road will be widened to include a grass median, bike lanes and sidewalks. The cost of project is $3.7 million.
It will include a roundabout near Carrboro High School at the intersection of Smith Level and Rock Haven roads.
In other Orange County road news, the N.C. Dept. of Transportation is closing Brown Road from Laws Store Road to Breeze Road to replace the bridge.
The road is expected to remain closed until April 27 while the bridge of the North Fork Little River is replaced.
During the closure, motorists should follow the signed detour from Brown Road to Laws Road to Walnut Church Road to Breeze Road back to Brown Road.
