One killed in Orange County wreck
A 23-year-old former Durham resident was killed Friday night in a head-on collision on Erwin Road.
Mario Delmonico Giovanni Boni, 23, died on impact when the Honda he was driving crossed the centerline and hit another Honda head-on, said N.C. Trooper D.L. Metts.
Boni attended Jordan High School and Durham Technical College after his family moved to Durham in 2003. He then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the music business, receiving his certificate in the UCLA program of recording arts.
Boni had returned to Durham from Los Angeles to spend the holidays with his family. Services were held Thursday. He is survived by his parents, John and Donna Boni of Durham; his sisters, Sasha Hoffman and husband, John, of Fairfax, VA; and Gabrielle Boni of Greensboro.
The wreck is still under investigation, but Metts said Boni was driving south and going about 70 mph in a 45 mph zone on Erwin Road when he crossed the center line just south of Whitfield Road. There was no obvious sign alcohol was involved, but Metts said he is still waiting the results of blood alcohol tests.
The other car was being driven north by Matthew Mauro, 61, of Chapel Hill. Mauro’s wife, Patricia Mauro was a passenger. Matthew Mauro was transported to Duke Hospital, and Patricia Mauro was transported to UNC Hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, Metts said.
Matthew Mauro is chairman of the Department of Radiology at UNC, and Patricia Mauro is an assistant professor of dermatology at UNC.
