Police: Woman exploited elderly neighbor
CHAPEL HILL – Police charged a Chatham County woman with fraud and exploiting the disabled or elderly Wednesday after she allegedly tricked an elderly woman into giving her money twice.
Police charged Vanessa Renee Gibbs, 43, of 4836-A Manns Chapel Road, Chapel Hill. She was released on a $500 unsecured bond.
The victim’s daughter reported to police in November that her mother may have been a victim of a crime while she was living on South Estes Drive, said Sgt. Josh Mecimore of the Chapel Hill Police.
Because the victim had memory problems, Gibbs allegedly was able to convince the woman that she owed her money, and the woman paid her, Mecimore said. Gibbs also allegedly told the woman she would do some car repairs, and then charged the woman for the repairs when she had not done any, Mecimore said.
The total allegedly taken from the victim was $1,500.
