Shooting on Cecil Street leaves one dead
Only hours into the new year, a 33-year-old man became the city’s first homicide victim of 2013 early Tuesday when he was gunned down on Cecil Street.
Kinta Lamont Newman was shot while he was outside in the 200 block of Cecil Street shortly before 3 a.m. Acquaintances took him to an unidentified area hospital, where he died of a gunshot wound, according to Durham Police Lt. Brian Reitz.
Investigators were searching for a black male in a white turtleneck shirt who was last seen driving a dark-colored Cadillac of unknown model and style.
It’s not yet known whether Newman knew the shooter or what motivated the killing, Reitz said.
Police declined to say which local hospital tried to save Newman’s life. The treating hospital asked police not to identify them due to “a combination of factors, to include the reprisals,” Reitz said. It did not appear that the shooting was gang-related, he said.
