Police identify bodies in house fire
Police on Thursday identified two people who died in a Saturday house fire.
The victims were Wanda Roughton, 70, and her son, 48-year-old Dean Davis, both of 120 Davidson Ave.
Their bodies were found in the house after the fire broke out about 9:41 p.m.
Dan Curia, interim chief of the Durham Fire Department, said the cause of the fire was still being investigated Thursday.
Officials said earlier in the week that a space heater may have contributed to the fire, and that the fire started in a left rear bedroom. They said they did not find a functioning smoke detector.
Firefighters said they saw smoke when they arrived. They searched the house and found the victims.
They said one room was significantly damaged, and there was smoke damage throughout the house.
Pauline Bullock, whose backyard adjoins the house, said she was shocked by the deaths.
“It’s sad, because they were good people,” Bullock said.
