Merrick Moore/Mill Grove reunion this weekend
The 2014 Merrick-Moore/Mill Grove All-School Reunion will be today through Sunday at Durham’s Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center, 4700 Emperor Blvd. The classes of 1963 and 1964 will celebrate 50 years and receive the “Golden Tiger Award.”
Festivities open with a reception and late registration today from 7 to 11:59 p.m. in the Crystal Coast Room. On Saturday, there is an alumni organizational meeting and brunch from 10 to 11:30 a.m., also in Crystal Coast. The banquet, which highlights the weekend, is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Empire Banquet Room and will be followed by a dance until 1 a.m. On Sunday, a worship service is planned from 10 to 11 a.m. at the hotel. Reunion activities conclude with a poolside picnic from 1 to 6 p.m.
Merrick-Moore, 2325 Cheek Road, is now an elementary school. The current facility was completed in 1950 and the first high school class graduated in 1951. The 1969 graduates represent the last Merrick-Moore high school class. Mill Grove Elementary School, a three-teacher school, was built for the 1924-25 school year as an elementary school, but over the following decade high school grades were added. By 1937, the first graduates received diplomas from Mill Grove High School.
