A woman reported she was raped early Sunday in a bathroom of a downtown bar on West Franklin Street.

The assault occurred about 1:35 a.m. at the West End Wine Bar at 450 W. Franklin St., according to Sgt. Josh Mecimore of the Chapel Hill Police Department.

The woman reported that she was in the downstairs bar known as The Cellar and had been talking to a man there. When she got up to go to the bathroom, he followed her inside the bathroom and forced sex on her, Mecimore said.

Initially, the woman reported the man was tall but when investigators re-interviewed her later, she said he was about 5’6,” Mecimore said. She said he was white and was wearing a light blue polo-style collared shirt, jeans and brown shoes. The woman, who is in her mid 20s, thought the man was in his early 20s, Mecimore said.

Police are investigating and asking that if anyone has information about the incident or the man to call the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760 or contact Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC CrimeStoppers at 919-942-7515.
