Motorcyclist dies in crash
A motorcyclist died Friday after crashing into a bridge rail in northern Durham, officials said.
He was identified as 70-year-old Luther Yates Jr. of Hillsborough.
Chief Len Needham of the Bahama Volunteer Fire Department said the accident happened about 5 p.m. when Yates crashed his motorcycle into a guardrail at a small bridge on Bahama Road at Lake Michie.
Yates was transported by UNC Air Care helicopter to Duke University Hospital, where he died later Friday night.
Needham said firefighters found Yates lying in the road.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Trooper Mike Holmes of the N.C. State Highway Patrol’s office in Durham said speed was a factor in the accident. He estimated Yates was traveling 50 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone.
Holmes said the accident happened at the “extremely sharp curve” at the bridge.
He said troopers are awaiting toxicology test results from the N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill.
