No injuries in fire at UNC Hospitals parking lot
No one was injured in a fire that took place early Monday at an outdoor parking lot underneath a UNC Hospitals pedestrian bridge, according to a hospital spokesman.
Four golf carts used for hospital transport were destroyed and a fifth was badly damaged, said spokesman Tom Hughes.
The fire took place at about 2:30 a.m. Monday, Hughes said. In an email, he said that investigators determined that the fire was caused by a battery malfunction on one of the golf carts.
The pedestrian bridge that crosses over Manning Drive to provide access to the Dogwood Parking Deck as well as the valet parking lot in front of the hospital were expected to remain closed until a clean-up of the affected area could be completed.
