The Durham Diabetes Coalition will offer a free diabetes self-management program, Living Healthy with Diabetes, starting July 22. The six-week program is open to Durham County residents. Participants will meet weekly at Healing with CAARE, Inc. from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and are urged to attend all six sessions for the classes to be most effective.
The program has been developed by Stanford University and aims to educate participants about healthy eating, exercise, working with health-care providers, using medications wisely and treating symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Participants will make weekly action plans, share experiences and help each other solve the problems they face in their self-management care.
“The demand for these programs has really increased,” Chasity Newkirk, public health educator and co-instructor, said. “The diabetes coalition plans to continue offering diabetes self-management programs to help participants manage their illness and prevent or delay complications.
The programs are part of an ongoing effort by the coalition to reduce injury and death related to type 2 diabetes in Durham County. Additional diabetes and chronic disease self-management programs will be offered this fall.
To register for Living Healthy with Diabetes or to learn about ongoing activities, call Newkirk at 919-560-7769 or visit the Durham Diabetes Coalition website.
The program will be limited to the first eight participants. Registration ends July 15.
