Armed man at UNC arrested
A man was arrested Sunday after UNC went into lockdown for about an hour.
According to UNC News Services, an unidentified man was arrested in connection with the emergency sirens that were activated on the university’s campus around 4:20 p.m.
UNC police reported a white male armed with a knife or knives on campus near the Pit. The man fled campus and was later apprehended by the Chapel Hill Police then transferred to the University Police.
An emergency notification was issued by the UNC Chapel Hill emergency system, Alert Carolina, and emergency sirens activated after police reported an armed and dangerous person was on or near campus.
Students, faculty and staff were advised to go inside immediately, close windows and doors and stay inside until further notice. They are also advised to follow directions from emergency responders or university officials.
The university issued an ‘all clear’ alert at 5:22 p.m.
The investigation is ongoing.
